Thread: plastic or cotton covers for machines
07/01/2019 05:14:56

My mini-lathe is approaching it's twelve'th birthday. It has zero rust problems.

After use I lightly give the metal parts a mist from an aerosol can of this **LINK** and cover it with a wheelie bin liner, topped off with a cotton bedsheet. Sometimes I have noticed that the sheet feels a little damp when I remove it, but underneath, all's well.

Admittedly the air temperature in my part of Australia seldom goes below zero, but the humidity and summer temperatures are really hot (44°C /111°F) here last week so cause their own share of problems. (Sweat dripping onto the ways has to be wiped off immediately or it will leave a mark) sad

The lanolin based oil seems to help a lot (never seen a rusty sheep), it's safe to use and also makes a great cutting fluid for aluminium if I run out of kero.

Only downside is that I once used some to flush a model diesel engine, flicked the prop and away it went!

Thread: Measurements from the past

So we had better add the military MIL. which in a full circle gives 6400 MILS, 1 MIL subtends 1 meter at 1000 meters so it is easy to use for artillery corrections annd for spotters to give corrections for fall of shot. To add that you can get Theodoilites scaled in MILS.

Clive

Spot on Clive. I use a rifle-scope with a MIL dot reticule. The 'dots' subtend 100mm at 100 metres which makes things a bit easier when calculating wind drift and offset when target shooting with .22's.

Thread: Forum Video Size
30/12/2018 10:05:33

A friend just gave me a preview of a 5G Samsung phone. We had to go to Canberra to test it. It blows my broadband out of the water although the test network was not loaded we could watch movies in real time.

Coming next year the phone companies are going to change the way that we get online **LINK** so 'traditional '(cable) ISP's are in for a bit of a challenge,

I see this as good,as the traditional ISP's shall have to lift their game or lower their prices.

Either way we, the consumers, stand to win.

Thread: storage of short offcuts?

Whatever way to pick to store your offcuts, I have found it quite useful to write the specs on them (diameter, material type) using a CD marker pen.

Thread: Emco Compact 5
27/12/2018 02:32:55

Many years ago I used to compete against an expert with my Free Flight models.

John L, always had the custom turned venturies, needle assemblies and shut-off's for his power models and the most exquisite ball raced folding propellor hubs and Montreal stops on his competition rubber powered models. They were like the one's that I read about in overseas magazines.

One day I was invited to visit my friend's house and he showed me his secret weapon, an Emco Compact 5 lathe.

Of course John was too modest to admit that he knew how to get the best out of it but it was it was inspiring to see what was possible and a bit depressing to realise how much I needed to learn.

Still learning btw but it's a nice little lathe (Emco C5), you could do much worse.

Thread: Gatwick Drone 'Attack'
24/12/2018 16:39:16
Posted by Sam Longley 1 on 24/12/2018 15:48:29:

I just think it seem weird that with all the technology they cannot jam the 2.4 channel for just enough seconds to crash the drone. I know that modern transmitters (like my Futaba) change frequencies within the bandwidth quickly but surely they can beat that. Or is it a case that doing so may disrupt some other important systems operating on the same frequency?

A pre-programmed flight such as this one does not rely on the r/c transmitter, just a link to GPS satellites **LINK**

The chase drone just had the Litchi co-ords offset by ten feet. An impressive flight but probably quite illegal where I live.

In fact one could theoretically fly the Gatwick mission from Australia given a Google map of the area and somebody to place the drone for take-off.

Scary but true,

So here is the typical knee-jerk reaction from our local muppets based on the 'facts' **LINK**

23/12/2018 07:40:33

Many years ago (1978) I used to fly r/c 'targets' in front of a line of M60 machine guns, a few 7.62 Bren's and a few AR -15's thrown into the mix. Admittedly they knew that the target was approaching which is more then the Gatwick operators knew.

About 1 in 800 rounds hit the a/c and when one did it usually caused little damage. A drone would be more susceptible to a hit though. **LINK**

I agree with Neil. Track down the idiots and then throw the book at them. Locked up for five years with 'Bubba' should sort out the idiots.

Maybe a bit cynical but a company selling anti-drone devices would see this as a windfall dont know

Thread: Bought it, never used it.
21/12/2018 22:37:41

Posted by Lathejack on 21/12/2018 20:30:08

..............I now have a job for it, and plan to make a short internal grinding spindle for it. The 80mm diameter grinding wheels that came with it are all 80 grit, I wonder what sort of finish they will produce.

Has anyone else used one of these little Toolpost grinders? It has a 250 Watt motor, with a grinding spindle speed of 6000 RPM. It all seems fairly well made.

Edited By Lathejack on 21/12/2018 20:32:55

Lathejack, I have the same C3 TPG that I purchased about ten years ago for finish grinding hardened model engine crankshafts.

It works quite well at this task as long as one remembers that it's only a finishing tool, used to take off the last 0.0005" - 0.001" or so. I cover the ways in oily paper towels btw although there is very little residue.

The resultant finish is excellent using the 80 grit (pink) wheels.

The only problem that I have encountered was last year when the the drive belt disintegrated so a few replacements were located and ordered from LMS. As the postage from the U.S. was a little steep I took the opportunity to fill out the order with some 120, 180 and 240 grit wheels plus a pile of 6mm ball oilers to suit the mini-lathe took up some spare room in the package.

The items arrived in about ten days in good condition.

(The ball oilers cost me about $1.50 Au btw, **LINK** the local quote was $6.50 each so no wonder I shop overseas).

I have not tried the finer grit wheels in anger yet as the finish from the 80 grit wheel gives a fine enough surface for what I was doing.

Thread: Telephone / Internet Scams
18/12/2018 06:46:34

This scam is becoming a favourite here in Australia. Unfortunately a few people have been sucked in. **LINK**

Last night on the local TV a reporter engaged such a scammer and the abusive language that was hurled at the reporter was bleeped out as it was quite vile and disgusting.

Each month at the Day Club where I volunteer a Scamwatch **LINK** update is presented to the elderly people, The feedback is scary as many are targetted. Luckily, the warnings seem to have worked.

Older people, likely to own their own home, cashed up and not online are quite vulnerable and often targetted, so keep an eye on them please.

Thread: Mini Lathe Rear Tool Post
16/12/2018 04:06:09

I realise that this has already been mentioned in the past but as a reminder, an upside down front mounted parting tool mounted in a QCTP (to get the centre height correct) with the mini-lathe run in reverse is very effective.

I have tried this as an experiment and it worked although it's a bit of mucking about setting up the tool height on centre.

I found it easier to tighten the gibs and just plunge in with a sharp tool and plenty of lube. A 'V' groove in the tip of the parting tool seems to help.

P.S. Do Not try this with a screwed on chuck!

Thread: Cost of deliveries
14/12/2018 07:09:13

Re: Cheap shipping from China.

I was told/read a few years ago that their government policy was not to allow a ship to leave China with unused space in a shipping container.

The surplus space was allocated to smaller exporter's at a vastly reduced rate to encourage exports/local industries and to gain overseas currency.

Whether this is factually correct I am not certain but it does make economic sense.

XD 351, the guides were Fuij, I like the ceramic inlays. I decided to treat myself so went top shelf on all the components, the guides were not cheap but no regrets btw,

The only thing that gave me more satisfaction was tying a fly that actually a fooled a dumb trout and my little X3 mini-lathe and X2 mill made it possible to manufacture a decent fly tying vice.

Here is another trout from the lake.
