Can second Paul's recommendation. It also has the benefit of having an inbuilt 'fail safe' mode! This I discovered when in a moment of madness I turned the saddle handwheel left hand down instead of right hand down, the bit digging in, BUT that 'fail safe' mode kicked in and the tool bit was pushed down the holder out of harms way. Ah, I only counted the wheels on the trailer. Forgot that the hitch is also described as a wheel. Last night had another go at the drawer organizing saga that is now starting to annoy me Later did more work on Yuri's TouchDRO box of tricks. Must say that the scales from Ketan's emporium are excellent. Geoff - Starting to feel better Edited By OuBallie on 15/03/2014 10:18:09 |

Tom, You are somewhat far for a weekend browse through by books me thinks For a novice that engine would not look out of place on anyone's mantelpiece. Very very nice. John beat me to it with regards to the score marks. The only solution you now have is elbow grease and emery cloth. One thing I forgot to include in my first post is DO make the GH Thomas tailstock die/tap holder or similar. It was my second project and was in virtual constant use! That tool was a pleasure to use, and taught me what not to do when making all those die holders, hence my suggestion on a 'Scrap' bin. We all have them. Geoff - Bl**dy treatment is a pain in the whatsit!

Was given the mattress from GD's prison (cot), she has grown out of it, to lay on whilst working on my 1935 Austin Seven. I will no doubt fall asleep, being so comfy Geoff - Need to jack the car up higher now |

Welcome to the wonderful hobby Tom. Whereabouts are you in the land. If in darkest Norfolk, or surrounds, you are more than welcome to spend a day or more perusing my collection of books. What did you make with your previous machines? Ditto your new toys? I started off with an original Unimat and thought I could build LBSC's Tich! Well that turned into a laugh, BUT fortunately a kindly soul at the JLS, my namesake, whispered some very sage advise in my rear, and I soon had an Emco V10P with mill. My first stationary engine was the ubiquitous oscillator, powered by a Stuart Turner boiler. Seeing that little thing spin around with steam exiting everywhere was exilirating. There are books on building just about everything, covering steam and ic engines to tools, for hand or lathe use. Only you will know where your preference lies once you start making swarf. May I suggest a simple hand/lathe tool/accessory that will get you using your machines first, before agonizing over which direction to take. My first serious project was the Geo. H. Thomas tapping/staking tool, and it taught me a lot more about working metal than reading all the books available. Start with something easy to gain experience on how your machines operate. Oh, and do find a container and mark it 'Scrap' Geoff - Good to see newcomers entering the hobby. edit: c changed to v in fourth sentence, but original still valid Edited By OuBallie on 14/03/2014 09:28:16 |

I've used Gray's method virtually from day one, having read about it in some engineering publication, probably ME. Couldn't believe how well it worked the first time I tried. I'm three score and ten come September and still rely on this method, as it's quick and simple. Talking about scribed lines, the number of models/miniatures I've seen spoiled by 'in your face' scribe lines on valve gear etc always surprises me. Geoff - My drawer organizing marathon will go down in history as the longest such endeavor undertaken me thinks |

OuBallie , Ambiguous word since different spellings of the Ballie bit could have different meanings in different languages but given your occassional mentions of S.Africa is this anything close : Afrikaans for any of father figure , mentor , guardian , family elder - basically same as 'The Old Man ' in English . Probably semi slang coming from Dutch/German . ??? Regards , Michael Williams . Top marks for your homework! Ouballie means 'Old Man' in Afrikaans slang, and I'm certainly in that category, being three score and ten later this year. I do remember, when in in my 20s, wondering if I would see the Millenuim in! At that age of course, anyone over 35 was well past it, and no doubt the same thoughts by the young turks today. The light I HAVE seen is that things now take forever to do. Geoff - Still semi-floored from treatment, but improving. |

IanP & Martin, I will let this run for a while as I love a mystery. All this talk of going into the bowels of the earth reminds me of the time in the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorrn, and the lights being turned off to let us have the experience. The total & utter blackness sudden was not a little daunting at first, but it didn't last long enough for us to experience any peripheral light. Quite an experience though, as well as going through those caves. Another memorable one was going down the deepest mine in the world, namely Western Deep Levels near Carletonville, and having the heat and humidity hit you like a brick wall. Geoff - All that took place 50odd years ago. Where the blue blazes has that time gone?

With you there Neil. Every steam passage I've drilled has been done on the drilling machine, the angle gauged using Mk.1 eyeball and a normal vice to hold the cylinder blocks. Quick and easy. Geoff - Treatment caught up with me again, so incapable of doing much right now. Bummer! |

Peripheral vision = attack awareness. I remember reading that this is our inbuilt ability of being aware, albeit unconsciously, of any potential danger around us. I use this ability regularly at night, not just on my frequent trots. Geoff - Well I am an ouballie. |
