Thread: What did you do today? (2014)

Used the pressure washer to blast the cr@p off of the Patio slabs.

After nearly slipping a couple of times this past winter, I realised that it was time.

Have left all the detritus to dry out, so making it easy to sweep up.

The muck that came of was an eye opener, and no wonder it was acting like a skating rink.

Looking so 'new' again.

Bonus points from you know who

Back into the Workshop to continue with my iteration of a Saddle locking mechanism. Just need to weld rod to bolt head and then post some photos.

Dont know about anyone here, but I cannot remember such humidity before.

I've been dripping, BUT, it may well be due to treatment.

Geoff - A cuppa of the stuff Neil doesn't much like, and some DIY Biltong.

Dave,

Thanks for the info.

I have only bought a few digital additions via the iPad app and cannot find a print feature anywhrer unless I'm not looking properly.

Geoff - Time to clean the Patio before it gets too hot.

11/06/2014 13:19:01

Hmmm.

Digital only £10 cheaper than a paper copy, and NO way of printing pages that I can see, so it's a miss for me!

I have paper versions from day one of both magazines up until a few years ago, and I can make as many copies of the articles I want to take them into the Workshop and not spoil the original.

Cannot do that with the digital back copies I have on my iPad.

I have no intention of putting them on the Internet, but still treated as . . .!

Geoff - Back from the dentist so ready to vent my spleen!

Clive,

So much for the Govts inflation bull manure statements/figures!

I just need to see how food prices keep going up to know what a lie that is.

Govt figures are meaningless!

Rant over, so something more interesting.

Spent last night in the Garage figuring out how to mount the el cheapo 14v PowerDevel drill to be able to connect it to the BH600G's Feed Rod, so gave up to do something easy.

Suggestions anyone please on mounting the drill as grey cells are on strike.

Does anyone have any idea of the drill's wattage?

Made a start on making a few more SkyHooks as that was a lot easier on the grey cells.

The Garage was a pleasure to work in at around 23°C. Insulation and the aircon helped.

Finished bang on mid-night.

Thanks for all the responses.

I have a battery drill I can experiment with, so Apron off shortly.

Best way I think is to modify the Tailstock end of the Feed Rod to take an extension to allow easy experimenting.

Will post once I start.

Geoff - Garage was wonderfully cool yesterday at19°C, outside touching 27°

My '07 Fiat Dobló driver's door and rear hatch? can be locked/unlocked by turning the ignition key in the key slots in either door handle.

The reason I have three old cars - no computer/software grief!

I am able to fix the cars myself.

Spanners and multi-meter and job done, with the inevitable three letter words now and again of course, aimed at the part not co-operating fully. Sledge hammer nearby as last resort, but haven't had to use it yet.

Geoff - It's getting ready to really to pee down. Oh it's starting.

Loads of gee gees no doubt, but very strange that RR siamesed the last two front/rear exhaust stubs.

That arrangement would surely be thrown out due to interfering with each other?

Could it be just for that installation I wonder?

Geoff - Who am I to question RR engineers!

Went to measure the rpm of both Spindle and Feed Rod, but found all the headstock bearing oil had leaked from the two Sight Glasses so tried a different repair.

The first repair involved fitting new O-rings, that have hardened in less than a year.

Will do a separate thread if leaks cured.

Below are the Spindle and associated Feed Rod RPMs;

Gearbox - Position E and 112tpi
Spindle - 2000rpm
Feed Rod - 25/27rpm
Spindle - 1500rpm
Feed Rod - 20/24rpm
Spindle - 1000rpm
Feed Rod - 12/13rpm
Spindle - 500rpm
Feed Rod - 6/7rpm
Spindle - 250rpm
Feed Rod - 3rpm

Would one of the12v 100rpm DC high torque motors geared/non-geared work, connected either directly to or via pulleys to the Feed Rod. There is a speed controller with For/Rev switch on eBay, from China of course, with suitable PC PSUs from UK vendors.

Suggestions please.

I do have that TECO motor I thought of using on the shaper, and I could nobble a VFD form one of the millers, but that seems overkill.

Geoff - Wonder what the next project will be to add to the list, as if that list isn't long enough.

Indeed I did and certainly didn't mean it to appear to be a put-down.

Sorry if it came across as such, which it may have, reading my post again.

Grey cells don't always flag up possible wrong interpretations that my posts may generate.

Geoff - Forgot to set up bread maker last night, before pillow time - aargh!

ROTFL!

Lofty76,

Good advise.

Luckily someone had used their noggin and fitted valves to the outlets. Have had to drain everything in sight on other properties.

Dentists, don't we love going - NOT!

Whilst enjoying a home baked biscuit the other day, I heard a crack that sounded like the roof coming down, and tongue finding that I had 'managed' to remove the ceramic? front from one of my caps.

Now starting to look like the character Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me - Lovely!

Dentist on Wednesday for work booked last month, so will ask if the errant piece can be glued back on temporarily, or what.

Tap leak eradicated!

Well I am speedy Gonzales.

It was done 10min ago.

Time to fix the leak as it's been going on for too long.
Had visions of needing to drain both the hot water and feeder tanks after turning the cold water supply off.
First though, up into the loft to see if stop cocks had been fitted for just this eventuality and surprise surprise there where two with bright red handles in the two pipes exiting from the side of the feed tank, near the bottom.
Managed to get my arm in between other pipes and turned both off.
Back down and they had turned supply off to the basin hot water taps.
Removed the tap innards.
Well blow me! No wonder it was leaking! Not so much as a sliver of washer in sight. I had been trying to close the tap metal to metal.
Found the right washer and then battled to get it over the spigot.
Time to use grey matter so into the Carport, valve into vice but again battled with the washer.
Think think think said I and grey cells came up with the idea of using a 1/8"W ring spanner to push down on the washer and woohoo it slipped into place with ease.
Assembled, turned water back on and no more dripping.
Feels food to do something worthwhile and stop thinking about that drip. Tap drip, not me I hasten to add.

Geoff - Grey matter does co-operate occasionally

Please don't tempt me Neil.

Geoff - time to fix that tap leak.

Hello Mark,

Great idea using conduit.

Haven't yet had any files bang against each other that I've noticed, but time will tell, then your suggestion will come to the rescue.

Edit: Having had another look, I think your suggestion will be used sooner than I anticipated, as the MTT is going to be used more often from now on. Saver of files!

I've seen mobile vices, mounted on steel plates welded on poles welded to wheels, with tools on hooks underneath, so the same problem of crud falling onto them. I've been thinking of doing something similar with my big vice, or mount it onto one of the Carport steel frames. Decisions decisions etc. Only one way to find out, so Carport frame first, it being the easiest and quickest.

Geoff - I really REALLY need to stop thinking up more bleep projects!

Having completed my tool organising, I am now ready to replace those gears I mangled in my lathe - See 'I screwed up' thread.

I thought I had unbent the shaft, but not fully on use, and in any case all the remaining teeth on that bronze worm gear finally gave way resulting in no power feed to Saddle or Cross-slide.

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, I find that the Gearbox controlled speed to the Feed Rod just not slow enough when I want an almost ground finish.

I can achieve that finish on short pieces of work by manual feed.

Before I replace the parts, does anyone have any idea of what size motor I should use to power the Feed Rod?

Speed control plus forward/reverse naturally.

Geoff - watered plants then unblocked hand basin drain. Yuck.

Thanks for all replies concerning tachometers on lathes.

Confirmed my suspicion.

Thread: MobileToolTrolley (MTT)
02/06/2014 14:47:27

This is my last post, for the conceivable future at least, covering tool storage and organising, as I'm done with this saga that seemed never ending.

The reason I conceived the idea of using a trolley was what to do with all my boxes of drill bits? I would be using them in the drill presses, one of which is in the Carport, and lathe.

As in my previous workshop, all the drill boxes where just piled one on top of another, requiring a search for the right one.

Not having the necessary space to spread the drill cases out and not fancying the footwork to get and replace drills as needed when working in the Carport, a trolley of some sort seemed to be the answer.

I think I read somewhere about securing the lids of drill bit boxes to a vertical surface, making them easy to open and held in one place thus easy to find, so a vertical surface was needed.

Much head scratching followed with numerous designs, but priority was that it had to be easy to move around, and fit through the side door I made in the Up&Over garage door that I hinged.

Off I went getting the boxes of drills into a suitable order on the workbench, split Ferrous & Non-Ferrous. I had learned my lesson by now that cutting non-ferrous material needed some dedicated tooling such as drill bits, files and hacksaw. Bitter experience of files and hacksaw previously used on steel, just skating across brasses taught me a lesson.

As it was mobile, I wasn't going to make the same mistake I had done in the past of having the castor wheel tracks within the trolley frame base, but outboard, so preventing easy tipping.

A top and sliding shelve/s where included for the tools in regularly and/or use on the day.

There was also space at the rear to mount the 5 multi-drawer units that where getting in the way in the Garage and Carport.

Have added a new Album, 'MobileToolTrolley (MTT)' with annotations I hope are adequate.

I did these this morning whilst recovering from yesterday's day out with two & a half year old GD and her first time on a bouncy castle, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Geoff - Tap leak can wait till tomorrow.

Thanks for all the PMs and photos. Magic!

iPlayer BBC2 yesterday at 2100h/9pm.

'Britain's Greatest Pilot - The Extraordinary Story of Captain 'Winkie' Brown'

Talk about nine lives, he certainly beat the odds.

Watched it last night whilst recovering from day out with GD. Did I ever have such energy!?

2.1/2years old, and her first session on a bouncy castle and loved it.

Geoff - Just about recovered. Rooibos will help

Thread: Tool drawer organising
01/06/2014 20:33:32

I'm on a roll, and added an Album for my Taps&Dies unit, an off the shelf three drawer unit this time, modified.

Tomorrow I will bore everyone with my iteration of the multi-drawer units similar to Norman's, then I will be quiet for some time recovering.

I now need to make something! Rear ToolPost and JS' lever Tailstock.

Geoff - Time to catch up on some DVDs - 24, Bourne series, Hornblower or Sopranos?

01/06/2014 17:00:38

Thanks for all the kind remarks, and sincere apologies for upsetting the weekend for some.

I do like things in order, something I've inherited from my Mom, definitely not from Dad.

Not sure if I should add photos of my Tap&Die drawers and the small plastic Multi-drawer units, as I may well spoil the rest of the year for Norman

Having learned a lesson with my first workshop, I deliberately made the drawers shallow so as not to have tools/stuff piled one on top of another.

Don't remember how long they all took to make, but I'm well pleased with the final result.

Geoff - A mug of coffee from home roasted coffee beans.
