No objection Neil.

Another thought for the web designer is to include a 'Preview' button if possible.

Chris,

You have done the right thing!

It will transform the lathe, as I found out with mine.

Did you get the remote station as well?

Now fit a clutch!

Geoff - How did I manage before fitting the clutch?

Ben,

Nice buy.

Its a Class 19D with two types of tender.

What gauge is it, and did it come with a tender?

In 3.1/2" it would be equivalent to a British loco in 5" gauge.

Looks as if it's been standing unused for a while, so will need careful inspection and cleaning.

Being your first, DO take 'photos for Africa' of every part. (Lots and lots)

I concur with BB about joining a local club.

You don't say which part of the world you are.

I'm in South Norfolk and you are welcome any time.

The first time you crack the regulator and it pulls you, it will be an experience never forgotten.

Danny,

The photo of that Harvard brought back memories of the sound they make.

Once heard, never forgotten.

In the '60s I watched one perform aerobatics above, then 'dive bomb', the suburb of Linden, Johannesburg.

The pilot was no doubt trying to 'impress' one of the opposite sex.

He stopped after a few days, probably having been 'hauled over the carpet' for his exuberance.

Geoff - Still recovering from the 0300h jaunt Monday FFS!

Ditto what has already been said re the gears.

Which ME Issue are you referring to please?

Just in case I need to make any gears for my classic cars.

Thanks to Ian S C for his observation regarding my 'winking idiots', I thought it was time the Forum had a means to 'TEST' a response to a thread before actually committing.

I am of course thinking back to the be beginning of time with regards the Internet, when Newsgroups where the forerunner of the Forums we use today.

All newsgroups had a thread solely to enable one to test a post beforehand, so here goes with mine.

I sometimes find the need to edit posts after the event, which is a PITA, especially when trying to get some imbedded text, photo or video working.

just a thought, so here goes.

Test to see which is the culprit, with or without a dash:

Rod,

The Engineers will be needed to draw up a schedule of parts and tools needed first, then a time/cost analysis, followed by an HSE evaluation ant it's paperwork.

Been there, done that.

Now I just do when energy allows.

Thread: My fathers Workshop and Projects - New home?

John,

Condolences.

By the sounds of it, you could use quite a few of your Dad's tools for you car restoration.

I use my Workshop to help me with the 'rejuvenation' of my Classic cars, as well as building a traction engine, making tools & modifying/adding to my machine tools.

Geoff - All that needs energy at three score 10months. Hence Red Bull

Don't mind admitting I fell into that group after qualifying.

It took me years of experience, including being in charge of a DO, before I could even think of describing myself as 'An Electrical Engineer'.

Unfortunately the name 'Engineer' has been so 'bastardised' and degraded over the decades, it's become pretty meaningless, in this country at least.

Geoff - Red Bull in action! Well I do need to get energy from somewhere for goodness sakes

Where the blue blazes do those winking idiots come from, when not needed!?

Geoff - Grrr time. Finger problem?

23/08/2014 20:07:13

Thanks for the suggestion Thor.

I think I will wait and see for now, plus I haven't yet checked the lower pin to belt gap to see if they are touching.

Did notice two words missing at the end of this sentence:

'I found that the corner cutout on the Lower Clamp Plate (Drawing labelled 'Upper Clamp Plate' ' wasn't needed.

Geoff - SciFi novel time.

23/08/2014 14:42:53

Now you all know why my projects take so long to reach completion!

I get side-tracked all to easily, but on this occasion, the end result had me shouting:

! WHOOHOOO !

After running into the proverbial brick wall with regards the FeedRod motor, hopefully now solved, thoughts turned to that nifty "Clutch" designed by Ray McMahon and fitted to his BH600G lathe. Details in MEW 88.

Material soon to hand, marked, cut, drilled, tapped, assembled and ready to install.

I didn't have any silver steel to size, so just used BMS.

The slot in the Upper Clamp Plate (Drawing labelled 'Lower Clamp Plate' was quickly done on the Boxford Shaper, after I gave up setting the Tom Senior up.

I found that the corner cutout on the Lower Clamp Plate (Drawing labelled 'Upper Clamp Plate'

A bit of a fiddle getting the frame into place finding it necessary to remove the top Pin, but soon had the two Clamp Plates tightened up against the flange at the base of the Headstock casting.

Top Pin in place and time to check.

Operating lever fitted and bolted in place, so ready steady GO.

VFD drive to the fore, Jog and slow speed selected and Green button pressed.

Now the BIG test.

Hold breath and be ready to stop if anything sounds graunchy.

Operation of the "Clutch" time, so grab the black ball handle and push/swing it upwards.

Well what can I say except "WHOOHOOO! again.

It works perfectly and easily as well, without any belt grab at all.

The only thing I will need to rectify is the tilt of the frame, as the top pin is touching the belt ever so slightly when the "Clutch" is disengaged. It's so slight, however, I may just keep a check on wear first though.

I can see this 'mod' being up there with all those things in life that have you asking "How the heck did I manage beforehand?" as was the case after fitting VFD drives.

No doubt this could be added to all those generic 12"(9"x24"/36" belt drive lathes.

New Album added.

Geoff - What next? Keep watching this Forum!

JohnH,

Ingenious to say the least!

As usual, it took me some time to figure out, even with your description. Par for the course.

Ta for apologies, but ?

I do hate mowing, even thought it only takes me 10min.

Geoff - It's a wildlife garden (my excuse), so snakey must have found it to its liking!

16/08/2014 15:46:48

Yesterday.

Continued with fitting the battery drilling machine to the lathe.

Also plucked up courage, camera in hand, to see if that snake was still in residence.

Gingerly lifted the lid from the compost bin, holding breath in anticipation.

EMPTY!

He/she no doubt took more fright than I did and scarpered.

Told my neighbour that it had vanished, so now both he and his 'er indoors' now wary of gardening in that corner of their property

Now I wonder where snakey is now residing?

Geoff - Bad day, but getting marginally better after a few sips of R*d Bull. First time trying it.

BH600G FeedRod MotorUpdate!

I have at last made a start at fitting the battery drill as suggested by Bazyle, in conjunction with an Angle drive.

New Album added.

Advise needed please on the connection between the FeedRod and L-Drive shaft.

As can be seen the connection is only 5.7mm hidden inside the Rod End Cap, and I'm not too happy with this.

Was thinking of drilling the end of the FeedRod to take an extension piece, extending it past the Rod End Cap, thus giving more depth for the L-Drive shaft as well as more choice of using different motors if needed..

I need for sort this out, as the FeedRod with Worm Gear and Key can only be assembled together with ease whilst the Apron is off of the lathe.

Thinking cap on, and the following solution came to mind; Secure the extension piece using a roll pin that can of course be easily knocked out once the FeedRod is slid sideways, when it's roll pin, at the Gearbox end, is removed.

Geoff - Hope this makes sense, as it's past the time for my 40 winks

MichaelG & Clive,

I tried every way I could think of to 'relax' peepers, but I'm in the 'can't achieve' I think.

So gave up, and instead added another shelf in the Garage for the music player instead.

Then practiced using the HV20 in the Garage, in preparation to making the video showing how to remove the Apron from generic 6"x36" lathes. (12"x36" for those across the pond)

Geoff - Short back and sides, so feeling cooler.
