Thread: Computer Disaster! Help needed!
24/08/2020 15:29:53

Frances,

sorry about ur friend.......all the nice ones go early.....

lost a few good friends recently but managed to buy most of their tools....

only today I used some gear and brings a lump to your throat....memories....

I hope someone will remember me.....hahaha...for good reasons....

take care.......

23/08/2020 16:08:14

Frances..

.Hi...please read to the end....

I'm all Apple .....my old 27 incher would not start up.....looked at google and concensus said the fault was the wiring pick up/connector to the screen.....apparently quite a fault for that model year......

took it to bits and found nothing......put it back in the box....

fast forward a couple of years and knowing I was moving to Crete thought I'd have one last try.....as I didnt wanna move junk.....

phoning around, nobody in France (comp repair shops) would touch Apple.....

so thought why not just take it to Apple themselves.....asked for a quote...this is France.....hahaha...

1 month later get a call to say it was repaired ....

THE COST was €50 euro's...they charge that to look at anything....well pleased....

50 dabs well spent.......

I have 2x27inchers, Mac Book, iPad, 4phones 6 thru 10, mini mac, and a tiny music box....no major failures...ever...

Why did I go Apple, most of my friends produce videos for TV, music, art etc n they are all Apple....

basically I had so much grief with Windows and there last major cxxx up prior to windows 10 was enough.....

Apple were very expensive to buy in the early days but the rest have started to catch up price wise......

I'm quite happy overall but if something/system BETTER n Cheaper comes along I'll jump ship.....

going Apple has alowed me to keep what little hair I have left....hahaha....

glad there are people out there to help.....

Thread: Blown band saw circuit.
23/08/2020 15:46:13

shame after all those years.....

their machine wiring was always a bit weird.......

there's plenty of contactors out there.....and also many varied size and style of boxes...none of which is expensive....

I can't help u with the wiring but I'd be inclined to bin the lot and go with the Brit idea....no volt stop start switch etc....

even if it ment replacing the motor.....but that should not be nec......

and I'm sure somebody who's a wizz with wiring will be along shortly.....

My Bridgeport's wiring was a messy affair, will just bin the lot and replace all contactors......

not so cheap but it'll last my lifetime...and it will be reliable...

Thread: Do you clean the workshop up every day?
22/08/2020 09:00:58

at least once per year or if a really grumpy mood....

off to the workshop then empty it.....totally, except the racking....

floor and hardstanding outside just about level and everthing is on a frame so can be moved with a pallet truck....

even the Bridgeport....

find the stuff u lost and evict a few spiders....only joking....

end up with a box of odds n ends that gets sorted when it overflows....hahaha....

when I worked on my own I used to mop the floors......nuts, but it felt good.....

it'll happen again when I get my new place.....

Thread: Hardware for the shop
22/08/2020 06:56:00

I do that for normal nuts n bolt plus an identical range in St/steel....from 3mm-20mm

bought a few 3,4,5mm screws of diff lengths with nut's and nylocks also the same and in st/st...plus self tappers..

along with a big range of Allen bolts......

but this stuff gets used and replaced reg ...dread to think of how much money is invested there....

as for ur rather special wants do as above, luckily they dont cost much in those sizes and after a while u'll get a feel for what you need....

then order enough for the job plus 50% that way ur always ahead...

as for the end finish u can always machine a flat from a pionty end....

Find a good local supplier if u can but buying on line is so easy now....

I reg used a fastner supplier in Colchester for specials, who would post to France no probs....

wether I wanted 5 or 50...

Thread: Super 7 Spindle lubrication
20/08/2020 16:48:27

after a while it leaves an oily mark under the bearing...it always worries me...

quite fancy a regulated oil dripper....but my lathe is in a packing crate for at least another 6 months....

Thread: My wife broke the internet
20/08/2020 07:11:21

aint modern life so complicated....?

on computors I always wait for the new Apple update before loading the previous one....

seems safer to me....but those little note that appear on the screen telling u about the update drives me nuts.....

hahaha....

who's got time to write and wait for letters anymore......?

Thread: Who trains these ideots?
18/08/2020 16:11:07

I was always working away...so got the Brit Gas contract for service n repair for the whole hot water system.......

it did pay off when the hot water tank sprung a leak......

nice bloke, couldny do enough...perhaps the exception but we were happy overall......

Thread: used machine sales UK
18/08/2020 06:46:31

Alain,

thank's ur a star.....Frank

18/08/2020 06:38:23

Before I upgraded the comp I had a list of fav sites/forums etc to visit....

now it's disapeared.....

so am asking.....

there was a site /forum, u need to be a member off that sell used machines n tools, mainly for the hobbiest by the hobbiest.....there are a few trying to make a living from it but hey-ho.....

the reason for looking at the mo, my freind wants a machine moved and there was a firm that did it...well a couple that did it...not sure it was a proper business...

I think the site started Home ??????.co.uk but I cant find it....

can anyone help please...my mate is getting heartache from the seller of his machine....

thanks.....

Thread: BT
14/08/2020 11:18:33

if u think BT is bad try the French system....basically 1 provider and customer beware....

Now in Crete, for €31 per month.....unlimited downloads with a good wifi box.....every TV national station (all carp), hahaha) plus National Geogra plus a few others in voice original....some call's nationally free.....

paid about the same in France for just a land line........wouldn't have the land line if there was a Mobile signal....

need to text, walk up the hill for a Kilometer and get 1 bar.........

internet at the same level as Greece was €50per month extra....

At least in the UK u got competion.....U aint that bad off.....honest.....it just seems bad....

what was that, travel broadens the mind......hahaha....

Thread: Deburring Stones (stones for deburring)
11/08/2020 07:31:27

on the subject or deBurring.......

I use a chainsaw flat file for that job around the lathe.....have the other shapes as well.......

also have 1 perm on both mills........they are that cheap......

Oregon and other's make em.....€4 each the last time I bought some.....

Mine are European made but just cant rememeber the name and anyway the are buried in a packing crate somewhere.....

My thinkig was when I bought my first file was that if the can sharpen a HSS steel blade, it will do all I want.....

My go to little flat ultra fine file, always on the lathe must be now 10 years old and still works like new......

always coved in an oily residue (Suds), just a wipe off with a dry cloth and off u go again.....

Sometimes I even tickle a shaft that needs a tiny amount taking off or polishing.....u know when the bearing is just to tight.....

Have given a few to friends when visiting and all remark how good they are.....

Remember now "Bacho" .... Sweden not Europe.......sorry a grey moment.....hahaha...

Thread: Anyone recognise this?
11/08/2020 07:11:37

Thread: Viking Link Interconnector
10/08/2020 06:27:30

so, what about the UK connection to Europe.....same for the islands o the North....?

short distance = AC.....?

.all very interesting....keep it up....

09/08/2020 14:11:11

don't know about ur particular case

but I was tought only to use AC current over long distances because of the voltage drop......

what super conductor can do in the future who knows but I think they are also AC as well.......

BUT super conductors are just a thing for the lab at the mo......

Thread: Namibian Dust Storms
09/08/2020 14:07:29

In Crete we just had a dust storm blown up from Egypt....only 2-3days.....

the sun went brown, just like Los-Angeles when the Santa-Anna's blow in from Mexico...........

Nothing like ur's tho.....

just lately the av temp is between 32-36.......hot enough......but oh so nice.....

I was part of a walking / hiking club that got an invite to go to Namibia.......

I found out to late.....was on standby just in case somebody dropped.out.....

had to have a full medical and helicopter insurance in case of emergencies......hahaha...

Nce one Joe.......somebody got to keep an eye on the wildlife.....

..........

JOE,

just an ask, can u tell me what the Africaans name for their full size travelling spice cupboard...

u keep apart from spices, rice and grains etc.....

would like to build one for home...

when I was in S.Africa saw a few that were handed down thru the family.....beautiful old things.....terrific hardwood, hand sawn and shaped, big brass hinges.....shame we didn't have iPhones then for photo's........

the cupboard had double doors about 2' wide and the hight was around 6' and on casters, multi shelved and a lot of small drawers........it was apparently something the Dutch / German settlers brought with them in the old days.....

Google only shows a wall cupboard or spice racks.....

thanks.....

Thread: Lathe and big machines | help needed in finding them a new home

be confident, there's always a place for the big stuff.....

may take a while tho.....

Thread: Anyone recognise this?
09/08/2020 06:56:31

it's getting so even 110volt is a rarity on a lot of sites......

they want battery tools now.......

and why not most of the better brands make excellent equipment......

I'm stuck with some nice Hilti drills (4 at diff sizes) and at times u need a proper powered tool for extreme jobs.....

BUT I'd just love a battery model.......too old now to get my money's worth.....

Although I just bought a Milwaukee 3/8 impact wrench, what a revelation that is.....
