Thread: Hitachi 18v battery charger
12/05/2018 17:49:25

sorry, real burnt can't see any colours at all......clogs

12/05/2018 16:12:59

I have a 5 year old Hitachi 18v drill driver (UC18YRL, NI-MH, NI-Cd), not done a lot of work really......the drill head works off a 12v car battery.......

had a look inside the charger after hearing a click....!!!!!

seems that a little something has burnt out...it says on the board R8.....has two fine wires soldered to the board and is about 1.5mm in diameter and 4mm long.......seems a shame to throw the drill away for just this and a genuine charger is £55.....a third of the price of a new machine..

must be poss to solder a new part in just to try....?....

does the R8 mean something and where can u buy a new 1....?.......

many thanks clogs

David

might be a good idea to buy a set of thread gauges.........there are plenty of cheapo versions about.....

save a hell of a lot of time......

Thread: Compressor Oil
19/04/2018 17:57:40

I just use 5w-40 synthetic engine oil........never a problem in god knows how many years........

My main compressor (I have 4) is a huge, direct drive Ingersol Rand V twin, 3 phase .......would cost about 2 grand to replace and I use the synthetic in that as well......changed 1'nce per year........never a problem......

I bought my first Vincent as I couldn't afford a Harley, Duo glide day's.........ended up with 3 original's, 2 B's and a C plus 1 Norvin.......would have been cheaper to get a mortgage for a Harley.......

what utter rubbish the Vincent is....

an A series is a different matter tho.......

shame they didn't make more in number of JAP V twins.........

sold the lot plus all the spares before the heady days of mad values but they bought my first terraced house........

ended up with a very early Electra Glide and never looked back........

now got an Indian Scout and a 4 cylinder on the way up........

Mr.T-Guzzi, how correct u are.........

will look again in the morning, better light and the eye's work better.......

the only number I could read was 2.4 so guessed at Kw......ooops......

not really into this new way of sizing motors........

promise to try harder.........ta clogs

Hi all, 2 questions ........

a, have to replace a 45mf capasitor but can only find 40 or 50.....would the 50mf be ok....(it's for a constant run wood planer machine).......

b, 2.4kw Crompton Parkinson motor fitted to a pillar drill...what is the correct capasitor size (the original has been replaced with a plastic coated capasitor that is unreadable) to start the drill I just spin the pulley by hand (naughty, I know)....

any suggestions for a supplier other than the bay of flea's........

Thread: Yet another bandsaw question
13/03/2018 07:36:56

out of interest,

my SIP 12" was cutting out of square 1,5mm over 3" box section, top to bottom, where norm it was reasonable.......this has happened slowly over time........

anyway, hit a hard spot when cutting some used steel so the blade went past its best........

bought a new cobalt type, variable tooth blade and now cuts square again.......

now very happy, like to know how long this new blade will last, guess I'll have to wait........

Thread: Any other out of touch members ?
28/02/2018 11:18:51

I have many times tried to gain the interest of the younger folk in not just engineering but anything u can fix with ur hands (not useing a KEYBOARD) and so far no takers.........

hopefully quite soon, I'll be moving to an underprivelaged place where I will do my upmost to get a young somebody interested in the above subjects including woodwork......dirty word I know.......

so when I'm finished with it all, they can have the whole shebang of tools, machines and stock........in my heart I'd like to help somebody with not much hope to get on in this v/diff world......at least a good start......

I'm sure it's more diff now than when I started 50 years ago........!!!!!!!!!!!

Thread: Lathe bench height
08/02/2018 06:11:06

simple answer what ever suits u.......don't care what anybody else thinks, they'r not gonna use it.....

put the thing on a stillage if u can and adjust the height till u get it right......all my machines (2 large mills and 2 lathes, C/Student and S7) are on an adjustable steel frame/chassis so that they can be moved easilly by pallet truck.....did the same stillage wise but allowed for 4" for the pallet frame / truck to go under...the Bridgeport needs a duck board cos I'm a short axse.

apart from my inpending move I like to empty the shop and have a good sweep and a mop a couple of times a year......yes I'm completely mad......hahaha.

Thread: Lathe stand
30/01/2018 10:21:22

depends on what ya want.......personally I'd make or adapt a cabinet......don't bother with just legs, a waste of space....always use heavy / thicker grade of steel.......weight is ur friend........as for the top, depends on budget.....u'll need drawers or some form of shelving.......

have fun making it........clogs

Thread: large steel disc's
24/01/2018 08:23:33

sorry, tractorman........

my first thjought after plasma cutting.......I live in the boonies outside the UK.........can't remember the last time I saw anything that big.......

was thinking along the lines of a single point cutting tool along the lines of a large fly cutter........

spose could get the job done in the UK and then ship.....

still cheaper than getting it done here I guess.....clogs........

there's gatta be a way to do it myself with what I got.....
