Thread: Exceptional characters
17/08/2018 20:08:07

I too remember 2 people that were important to my life's training........

the first guy was a trained blacksmith, when I started my apprenticeship he was over 70.......we used to fit out Fire Engines, the council used to buy a basic model in and we'd fit out everything........anyway what he did with metal was amazing, no fancy machines or benders.everything was done in a beaten up old vice or on the anvil.......best part, he hardley ever measured anything....!!!!

second guy used to restore antique machines and motorcycles, amazing skill's on lathes etc....skill's list to long to mention...

I often think of them.......

when I move I hope tofind and train a young'un for the few years I have left......would like to pass on what I've learned.........

as for clenliness, everything in my workshop is on wheels or moved with a pallet truck......before the rains start will treat myself to a full w/shop strip out and a good sweep.......plus, find what I didn't know I lost.......hahaha...

Thread: Magneto windings
29/07/2018 17:32:17

Colin,

I like ur style but I wouln't bother.......

too specialised job, apart from the wire size u need to know the amount of turns and we're poss talking a thousand's.....

also remember the wire is quite specialy prepared at least the insulating coating......

there are several specialist that will do the job and even insulate the windings under a Vacuum..........

mostley u get a 2 year warrenty........

u'll find em in Old Bike Mart, Classic Bike magazine etc......

good luck

Thread: Copper Solid Rivets
29/07/2018 17:23:05

HI,

I use a lot of brake lining rivets for body work, various lengths and dia's........

for specials I make my own........

Thread: Rear toolpost for parting tool
19/07/2018 08:23:32

just asking.....

is a rear tool post better than the front sort......I was under the impression that it was better for the smaller lathes.....

IAN's SC photo shows a monster lathe with 1........

reason:-

I'm still not happy with the parting off results on my Student 6" sqaure top lathe.........have tried tipped as well as HSS, best results so far are with a Co/Hss with a slight groove on the top edge like Mark Rand.......

to the point if it's bigger than 35mm I'll use the band saw and then go back to the lathe, the small stuff just use the hack saw.......

and before u ask all the gibs are tight and well adjusted, saddle locked, high speed and plenty of pumped coolant.......I make high speed the next speed up in the gearbox from the turning speed.....ie. if I turn at 500 the next up may be 800rpm........the high speed parting seems more reliable.........

just sick of buying new tipped tool holders.....did make my own parting tool holder that sit's right next to the mounting stud for the tool block......but it's a faf to take it on and off all the time.......main tool holder is the Dickinson type....always thought that the parting tool with the Dickenson holder was to far out, away from the body.......

be interested on ur thoughts.........

Thread: Should every machine tool be bolted to a concrete floor?
18/07/2018 08:46:23

XD 351, diff with no money, reminds me of me dad who had little tools and even less money........

he'd be shocked to see what's available these days.......have seen some machine that were double sided sticky taped to the floof......

guess it wouldn't have stopped the Bridgeport disaster, DG 1 mentioned.......

Thread: What depth concrete base for a workshop extension?
17/07/2018 17:02:41

HI Speedy,

concrete is 1/2 the price in Crete than in the UK.......

my 2 post car lift just sorta balances on 4x20mm studs about 1/2 meter apart with a couple of long'ish solid legs for FORE and AFT support........don't fancy that coming loose with a Landy on it.....!!!!!!!

plus the building legs (6m high)..earthquake and wind forces......

the only regs are, that I'm not quite 100% about, is around 1 ton of rebar per 15tons of concrete.......

yes it's also seismic zone........keep on rocking....hahaha.....

it's near the edge of the Euro-Asia fault line......loads'a fun.......hahaha

Thread: Shingle bells
17/07/2018 16:46:10

Ian SC......gold card eh........

does that help with the ladies of the night or do u still have to pay........hahaha

please excuse my sence of humour.......

I blame it on the heat wave up here.......

Thread: What depth concrete base for a workshop extension?
17/07/2018 09:54:30

forgot to say, when living in California,

on the bigger manul jobs we'd get a gang of mates round to get the work done quick.....

the women would turn up before lunch to get the grub ready.......

then when the job was done have a B+Q and a few beer's, u get the job done and everybody likes free beer and food.....

also

a close friend moved to a tiny village in Crete, up in the hill's.......nobody local knew.......after an hour the whole male population turned up to help with the unloading of the truck........after the job was done they, my friends were dragged off to one of the houses for an impromptu meal........how nice is that..........

makes for a great day....it's good to share........well I think so.......

was it 2 ton of concrete per hour on 1 of the gardening progs...the guy was well over 50.....!!!!!

my next build, 10mx10m will be a full 16" thick with rebar etc(ready mix tho) because of a 2 poster car lift......

it'll also be on 50-100mm high density polystyrene isulation with a dampcourse.......

Luxury oh Luxury underfloor heating as well..........

Thread: Changing the speed on a bench drill
15/07/2018 07:58:35

Thread: Beware the dreaded GOUT
15/07/2018 07:50:11

Ron,

sorry about ur troubles........I knew a guy that had the same problem.......he changed his diet etc and now has the occaisional mild flare up......the last I heard........

suppose like most I have used steroids, they sure take the pains away but long term use is a def no, no........go the diet route, there a lot of info on the web, sometimes rubbish but after studying a while u'll find out........

I suffered with extremly high collesterol.........rubbish drugs wrecked my life with long term use.......now found a homeopathic that does an equally good job WITH NO SIDE EFFECT"S for just a few quid a week..........my wife found out the info but the best results for info came from the USA.......higer population = more experience.

good luck with ur quest......... clogs
