Jason which one should I look for. Not sure which ones are solvent based.

When silver soldering what is the best method of ensuring that other parts in close proximity to the "joint" does not get soldered. I have made a jig to make some lifting arms. I do not want the arms getting soldered to the jig ?

Thread: Simple drawing package

Hi Guy's

Thread: Half size nuts
18/02/2020 11:05:57

Hi Alan

Kennion's do one size smaller BA nuts and set screws, basically it's a set screw of one size with the head of next size lower

For example the screw would say be 2BA but it has the head of a 3BA.. Half nuts are basically a nut which is half the width of a standard nut. They are very good for lock nuts as the come together when tightened and appear the same size as a standard nut.

Thread: Milling machine & Shaper query

Well I think an apology is in order. I sharpened a tool and honed it with a diamond block, I also adjusted the feed to as fine as was possible, The machine then cut a 2mm cut using some neat cutting oil. The finish was brilliant. So we can all learn from this excellent forum.

Well just to check I set a 2" square by 6" long piece of BMS up today. Selected the lowest pulley speed. VSD at 50Hz and had a go with a 2mm DOC. As soon as the cutting tool got to its full 2mm cut the machine stalled ? God knows what an 3mm DOC would have achieved. I would be interested to see how your cutting tool was ground. I may not have the correct tool shape. More than willing to have another go with a different cutting tool.

Have you tried Kingston Engineering in Hull, Had two new acme lead screw nuts made for my Tom Senior milling machine late last year, great service but not cheap.

Thread: Milling machine & Shaper query
27/01/2020 20:13:52

I to have a Boxford 8" shaping machine and Tom Senior milling machine, I usually use the shaping machine to reduce bar stock to the correct usable size. It gives a fabulous finish and is very enjoyable to use, It will remove 0.5mm cuts on BMS with ease, although I saw somebody on here a while ago stating his could cut 2.0mm cuts on BMS,,,,,,not hope in hell.

When I was an apprentice at ICI Billingham many years ago I watched a large Shaping machine in the mill wrights shop throw huge red hot cuttings all over the workshop. Happy days.

It's the same with lots of shows these days. I used to go the the big Land Rover shows 20 years ago. They were full of all the big names in Land Rover spares etc. Now they are not worth paying the entrance fee, Late last year I bought a second hand shot gun. The dealer had just returned from a big show down south. He needed to shift 100 shotguns at the show just to break even.

Thread: Normalizing cold rolled bright mild steel

The problem is the likes of Kennions etc do not stock black steel stock. Everybody stocks BMS.

17/01/2020 13:53:37

Looking to make a couple of radius rods for my BR Standard Class 2 over the next couple of days. As I intend to machine theses out of 1" x 3/4" BMS will there be any benefit in heating the blanks up to cherry red and letting them cool slowly prior to milling them to final profile. Will the normalizing stop - reduce the bending effect of machining normal cold rolled steel ?

Thread: Switches

The start push button is usually a Normally Open momentary, the Stop push button will be Normally Closed. The digital inputs into the inverter and the parameters sort out the latching etc.

Thanks Mark, I used Paragon's Tom Senior paint. Brush paints very well, although it is expensive.

Thread: Replacement inverter advise
25/12/2019 17:53:19

Just purchased two inverters from Inverter drive supermarket.

There selection is brilliant, as is the online info, Very easy quick set up information They have WEG CFW100 and a WEG CFW300. I was going to buy off the Bay, but for a little bit extra I went with the CFW300 @ £69 the CFW100 is about £59.

Both fitted to my Tom Senior M1 got them working in an afternoon.

PS i have no ties with the company.

Yes they feel really nice, Powering the table both ways with the main motor via an inverter feels smooth and quiet, Minimal back lash on all leadscrews.

Very simple, loads of 240 volt / 12 volt LED Drivers are available. What is the simple way to get from 240 volt mains to 24 volt DC to drive an LED ??? None...
