Thread: Weller soldering iron bits
07/12/2022 17:24:28

Yes indeed it would, if only I knew it! All the Weller info is missing on the rebadged RS soldering station.

I purchased a Radiospares (as they were back then!) soldering iron station a good many years ago.

I have uploaded a couple of photos into my album. It is a curie effect type of controlled temperature iron. I have a couple of spare barrels (which define the temperature, but I am down to one remaining bit.

I have trawled the Weller on line catalogue, which is very extensive. and failed to find replacement bits. Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

In hope,

Thread: Looking for a cylinder hone.
24/11/2022 21:23:45

Thanks Bill and Noel,

I looked for the hone on Ebay and the first on the list came up at £1153.99 (but free postage!). After picking myself up off the floor, the other listings ranged from approx £50 to £120. So not too bad!

I need to hone a 3" bore cylinder. After that it just might get some occasional use.

Any recommendations? Two or three leg, stones or silicon carbide balls and so on. There appears to be hundreds of similar hones at varying prices. I would rather buy something that people here recommend, rather than taking pot luck.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Thread: the effect of Electrolytic de-rusting on Soldered joints
24/11/2022 14:29:22

I would use a de rusting agent such as Evaporust. Once the rust has been removed, then use one of the epoxy treatments which are intended for petrol tanks.

Thread: Two stroke v 4 stroke piston
24/11/2022 14:24:11

A piston doesn't know if it is fitted in 2 stroke or 4 stroke, provided the bores are the same diameter and the piston top to centre of gudgeon pin are the same, then it should work.

It is an odd question, can you say what prompted it?

Thread: How do I identify chuck to find jaws to fit ?
21/11/2022 14:00:55

If you can find a set of outside jaws then you will find that they will cost an arm and a leg. Unless you strike VERY lucky and find a second hand set. I have been there and got the T shirt.

I once got lucky with a 3" PB grip true, but that was a near miracle. Do yourself a favour and do as Nigel suggests. It isn't as though your chuck is near new. In fact it looks a bit on the tired side.

Thread: 3/16" BSF flip top oiler (Gits)

Dave has saved the day! The nipple shop s out of stock, so a big thanks to Dave.

2 BA oilers seem to be even rarer!

Looking for a supplier of the above that actually has stock! I need the straight version. There are several suppliers that have the 90 degree version.

Alternatively has anyone got one for coin of the realm?

Very tight access so I can't fit a larger version (no room). I don't know if the drive fit version could be threaded, but worth a try if all else fails.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Thread: Machine main power isolator switch - useable ?
07/11/2022 22:09:39

I have several MEM 10 amp isolators of the old style and I find them to be perfectly acceptable. I have used them for years without any problem.

Thread: Central heating pump bearing replacement
07/11/2022 11:00:52

A lot of this "Feeling cold, turn up the central heating" is psychological. I was once flat broke and it was a cold winter. My goodness the house felt cold, with no heating. So I went outside for 20 minutes and got bitterly cold. Returning to the house, it felt delightfully warm!

I am amazed that your pumps fail so quickly. I have a Danfoss that lasted 40 years. Changed it when I did some work on the system, thinking it must be worn out. Not a bit of it, so I have a spare which I doubt I will ever need to use.

I do have a filter, but this never catches much particulate matter.

Thread: Clock lubrication
31/10/2022 20:12:27

I use silicone oil. The type used in vacuum diffusion pumps. It has a very low vapour pressure and this means that it lasts a long time after application.. It also doesn't oxidise readily, so it doesn't degenerate like a normal oil.

Thread: Silver soldering Torch size
21/10/2022 12:33:28

I agree about the torch size and propane use. The Toolstation Map torch isn't up to it. Not a 100% in agreement with Noel about silver solder or Sifbronze. I use both methods and would probably Sif bronze this job as Noel suggests. However you need a higher temperature for Sif bronze, so a high silver content solder may prove to be easier for a beginner.

You won't need much silver solder or Sif bronze and I think that appropriate fluxes may cost more than the filler rods!

Thread: Central Heating Room Thermostat
07/10/2022 14:56:38

Interestingly, most of the thermostats I have replaced for other people have been all singing and dancing high tech wireless gizmos. On asking what functions were actually used. The answers was "adjusting the temperature" So all that expensive high tech was totally wasted on them.

Andrew.

05/10/2022 15:03:39

Dinosaurs? Well, as the old mechanical type are much much cheaper and considerably more reliable, what is there not to like?

Unless you are the type that must have the latest tech gizmos.

Andrew.

05/10/2022 10:51:31

I always use the old mechanical type, if I am replacing for someone else in the village. Mine is 40 years old and still going strong. Once you have done the wiring, you can forget about it. Modern electronic / wireless ones don't seem to last and are expensive.
