Thread: Can you identify this gas torch? |

Definitely a glass blowers torch. The ones I am familiar with used mains gas and compressed air, but there are lots of variations on that theme. Andrew. |
Thread: How difficult is it to subscribe to MEW? |
20/04/2020 12:26:57 |
Thanks Bill, I shall do as you suggest. I did try https//.then as shown in the add, but that didn't work either. I feel a little more robust having had an early lunch. So I will return to the fray! Not moaning about the problem, just got a touch downbeat about fighting the system! Thanks again, Andrew. |

I thought I would subscribe to MEW and take advantage of a 3 for a pound offer which is on the website right now. So I phoned the number in the advert, after waiting a few minutes the phone was answered and I stated what I wanted. "What is the offer code", I was asked, "as far as I can see, there isn't one shown in the advert I replied"." Well if there isn't a code shown, then I can't do anything was the reply". Okay, I will order on the internet. Oh and by the way, can I order a back number, number 292? No I can't do that, but I can give you the phone number for back issues, which the lady did. I then entered the website referred to in the add and no, Mr Google couldn't find it. Blow the special offer, I will hit the big Blue Button under the 3 for 1 advert. It says "Subscribe Now". Would you believe it, Error 404? Repeated several times with the same result! Oh hell! I will print out the advert and fill in the details by hand and post it off. After some fiddling I got a print out of the advert, problem, the definition was very poor and I had difficulty in reading it. At this point I felt very dispirited and gave up. Surely there is a better way to promote MEW subscriptions without all the hassle! Regards, Andrew. Edited By Andrew Tinsley on 20/04/2020 11:27:37 |
Thread: MEW 292 |

Thanks guys! Andrew. |

I was contemplating subscribing to MEW which I shall do! However I would love to have a copy of MEW 292, but I see that MEW 293 is now "out". Who might I speak to to get a subscription starting with 292? Hope Jason or Neil know the answer! Andrew. |
Thread: Serious Readers, serious prices |
14/04/2020 19:42:34 |
What absolute BULLSHIT, "superior light quality"..........."They are unique and deliver the core benefit of the light". These people should be prosecuted for such rubbish. They are run of the mill, mainstream manufacturer's lamps in shoddy luminaires., at seriously ridiculous prices. Andrew. |
14/04/2020 17:28:50 |
Unfortunately, outfits like "Serious Reader" are little more than a con. In the days of Halogen lamps, they just used ones from the major manufacturers. Nothing special at all! Exactly the same with the newer LED versions. They charge an arm and a leg for bog standard lighting products.. You can get better engineered luminaires from most of the lighting retailers. for a fraction of the cost. It has been my misfortune to have to repair a couple of these offerings and they are simply crap. In case anyone questions my opinions, I have been involve in lighting R&D for well over 20 years, so I know what I am talking about! Andrew. |
Thread: Dismantling a Pratt Burnerd Grip Tru Chuck |
12/04/2020 19:38:16 |
Yes indeed Old Mart! I already said that it was the broken adjuster that is still in the chuck that is stopping the rear of the chuck coming off. Andrew.

Hello Swarf Maker, The chuck key that came with the chucks didn't have a hex on the end of the tommy bar. If you say there is a hex there, then obviously the key that came with the chucks is not the original one. I am not surprised that one sheared if that is the normal adjusting tool! Plenty of brute force and ignorance to be had with it! Andrew. |
Thread: Delapena Logo on the net? |
12/04/2020 16:00:05 |
Hello DC31k, Thanks for that reference. It seems to contain various pages of advertising for Delapena. The logos at the head of the pages is simple red lettering on a black background. The transfers on the kit are far more ornate including some gold shading. Thanks for your efforts, the site itself is well worth bookmarking, so thanks again. Andrew. |

My Delapena honing machine has been refurbished and the associated tinware has been repainted. My wife took some photos of the old style Delapena logos that were on the tinware. I had thought that my computer literate whizz kid children would have been able to photoshop the images and "repair" the damaged areas. Despite lots of promises, nothing has materialised! I would rather like to adorn the hone with new transfers, so I thought there may be some on the internet. A search revealed only the new company logo and not the rather elegant old style one. I may have been looking under the wrong search terms. Does anyone know of a decent Delapena logo on the net that I could use to make transfers? I know it isn't very important, but I would like the kit to look "as new" for once, before I cover it with honing fluid! Andrew.

Thread: Dismantling a Pratt Burnerd Grip Tru Chuck |
11/04/2020 21:47:08 |
Hi Ega,, The chuck keys are simple square section, conventional keys, no hex drivers are present. Hence my marvel at breaking one of the adjusters with an Allen key. Wished I was that strong! Andrew.

Hello Old Mart, the screw can't bottom as the hole comes out on a tangent. I assume it has broken half way along the taper as this is where it bears on the scroll disc!Must have been a bit of a monster whoever managed to break the taper section with just an Allen key! Still trying to find a digital camera to take a shot of the adjusting screws. I don't have (or want) a smart phone. Andrew. |

Not sure about photos, but will give it a try! Andrew |

I have been given two Pratt Burnerd 3" grip tru chucks. They have done very little work, but are neglected and seized up. Now I do know how to strip these down and the first one was straightforward after a good soaking in Plus Gas. The second one freed up and I took out the adjusting screws, to find one of them had sheared off in the middle of the taper section. Thus the rear of the chuck cannot be taken off. You get so far and the broken adjuster stops it coming out. The first chuck definitely needed the strip down and clean, so I expect the second chuck to needs the same treatment. I have run out of ideas to get the broken threaded remains of the adjuster, out of the chuck.. So any good ideas? I am still thinking of ways to do the job while I drink some red wine in the garden Thanks, Andrew. |
Thread: Archdale Horizontal Milling Machine |
11/04/2020 12:57:30 |
A friend used to have an Archdale horizontal mill. He claimed that there wasn't such a thing as a vertical head for it. From what I can recall, it would be a major job to graft on some other manufacturers vertical head. Not impossible but you would be better off getting a vertical mill for all the hassle it would entail. As for the age of your mill, Jonathon Garside is correct. My friends mill was in the low 3000 region and he could trace its history back to the 1930s. It was purchased by his father, direct from the factory in which he worked, when it became redundant. That would be just pre war. Andrew. |

I have a Centec 2B with a 2MT taper. I don't find that the 2MT taper restricts me. It will take off metal at a higher rate of knots than my nerves will take. Sure 2MT is old hat but don't underestimate what it will cope with. Andrew. |
Thread: Injector testing |

Hello Bob, In a word, no. You need steam so that it is able to condense and liberate energy which is transferred to the water. So compressed air will not work. Best to find someone local with a boiler who would be willing to help. Andrew. |
Thread: New design of mains plug? |
02/04/2020 13:57:55 |
The plastic covers for the pins of domestic plugs, make excellent fuel tanks for small IC powered, free flight, model aircraft. There is always a good use for apparently useless things if you think hard enough! Andrew. Edited By Andrew Tinsley on 02/04/2020 13:58:46 |
Thread: Sourcing gunmetal for leadscrew nuts. |
01/04/2020 19:57:45 |
Hello Hopper, You were bang on the money! The slide lock appeared to be working, but was in fact not clamping the slide. That explains the gross radial wear on the nut Thanks for pointing that out, otherwise the replacement nut will go the same way as the original. Andrew. |
