Hello JA,

My apologies for not making my input clear enough. I was strictly referring to unbound systems.I do agree that it is a difficult subject. I have worked on the problem off and on since my undergraduate days, well over 50 years ago and I still have difficulty in nailing the answer. But most of my results point to the belief that the Second Law is not obeyed for unbounded systems.

Hello JA,

I think you got the wrong end of the stick! I fully agree that entropy is a very important factor in our lives. The obscure point was, "does entropy increase in an unbounded system" (think cosmology). As a physicist I have long believed that entropy doesn't increase in an unbounded system. I am happy to say that some of the younger generation of physicists would agree with me. It is good to have like minded thinkers!

Entropy always increases in a closed system. What happens in an unbounded system is still a very much open question.

But then obscure physical problems really have no place in this discussion.

I was transferred to Papworth from Peterborough Hospital. Rush hour on the A1 and the two lines of cars simply widened the gap between them and the ambulance going down the middle with siren and lights flashing. The paramedic looked at the speed for me and said 90 mph!

I didn't think I was a real emergency case, it turned out the ambulance crew were based at Papworth and it was a quick way to finish their shift!

Thread: International tooling

Hello Brian,

That is just the ticket! Problem solved.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Can anyone recommend a site or book, that defines the measurements of International taper tooling. There are several different sizes taking up room in my workshop. So I have a selection of such tooling and no use for it.

I would like to sell it on, but I am stumped for an accurate description.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew.

Thread: Topslide question

If you have the tool holder that matches the ratchet, then I recommend that you retain the original set up. QCTP s are fine, but they are not all good news! I have a QCTP system which I use, but it isn't as rigid as the original set up. I revert back to the old system when I want to rough out a piece of work and when I want a good finish with honed HSS.

They also cost a fortune, you will need lots of holders if you want the benefit of a quick change system. If you are a relative beginner, there are more important things that you could spend the cash on, a QCTP system is not one of them.

I did the same as you wish to do and I regret it! I could have spent the cash on far more essential things. If you have plenty of money to spend on your hobby the fine go ahead and get a QCTP, otherwise think about what you really need right now.

I don't want to be a Luddite, but the "New Cover" does look an awful mess. Too many things trying to claim attention and too many human's about and not enough interesting machinery and product. The whole thing needs to be simplified AND carry a message as to what it is all about.

Thread: Windows 7

Thank you for all the input. I tried the graphite trick on the worn label and it worked! So Win 7 legally reinstalled on my old lap top!

Regards and thanks,

Unfortunately Arc are out of stock of the necessary bearings for modifying the cross slide.

That is a very good point, I will give it a try and see if that solves the problem.

I have some expensive, specialist software that only runs on Win 7. At least attempts to run it other Microsoft operating systems don't work. My dedicated Win 7 PC suffered a hard drive failure and when I attempted a re installation, I found that the product key (on the bottom of the laptop) had half of the characters worn away! Attempts to read the bar code with a smartphone, didn't work either. Perhaps some of the bars were worn.

I have a Microsoft disc for win 7 but no key! Hence my query of wanting to obtain said key in a legal way, as I don't want some dodgy malware loaded version!

It is probably easier to buy a second hand PC with Win 7 already installed.

Thanks for every ones help,

Andrew.

Thanks,

I did not realise that you could still buy a legal copy of Win 7. I assume this would be from a third party?

I need to install a copy of Windows 7 on a standalone PC. Is it possible to install such a copy legally and if so, how?

Thread: Quick change tool post ?
04/07/2022 09:59:48

Like the OP, I thought that a QCT system was de rigour before I had a little more experience. On a Myford, the QCT is noticeably less rigid than the Myford 4 way holder.

I tend to be lazy and find the QCT less hassle, BUT if I want accuracy and a good finish then the 4 way comes in to play.

If the OP is a beginner, then I would spend my money on more vital things than a QCT setup.

Thread: I may be stupid but

Mike,

I am well aware that a 3 jaw scroll chuck is a quick and dirty solution to work holding with any accuracy. I quoted the low run out, because it implies that the chuck was manufactured with more than the usual degree of accuracy. The chuck is unused as far as I can tell, so what it would be like after extensive use, I don't know.

Regards,

Andrew.

Hello,

I have just checked out the single pinion chuck. It is a conventional scroll type and 4" diameter. I don't need to make a back plate as it has a Myford thread!

So screwed it onto the lathe and checked it out with a DTI and different diameter silver steel rod. Average run out was 3 thou, so I am MORE than happy with that!!! I still think it is of Chinese manufacture, no identifier, only a couple of numbers. The finish on the scroll looks excellent, but then all the machining looks very good.

Maybe the Myford thread is a clue?

I didn't bother to strip and clean the single pinion chuck as it appeared to be brand new and still in the manufacturers grease. However I am curious to know more about it, so a strip down is in the offing. I will pass on the results.

Regards,

Andrew.

Hello Dave,

Despite your theorizing, I would lay a large bet that it is of Chinese origin. I am not really bothered if it is good bad or indifferent. I didn't even realize that it had come with a job lot that I had purchased, so not a loss, if it is a load of junk.

My main interest is its single pinion and why it was made thus and by whom.

Regards,

Andrew.
