Thread: Casting Bronze
07/07/2023 21:18:33

WHY do you need such a specific alloy ? Why not melt bronze/gunmetal from scrap ? Almost any boatyard will sell you marine pumps Etc from the scrap pile. OR as dave has said, melt brass and add tin. There are a few tricks to melting copper alloys - if you want help in this area let me know ! I take it you are well voiced in foundrywork and the pattern making and molding ? For iron you will need a LOT of heat ! Noel.

Thread: Clarkson T&C grinder
07/07/2023 16:24:11

Ian, Your spindle has an extension on it, that unscrews, lefthand ! Whilst the Mk2 grinder was made to run to 6000 it had a different bearing set, and you will need to watch the rated speed of the wheels you use ! If you need dimensions for bits let me know. I will send a PM re the instructions. Noel

Gentlemen, The instructions I have for the radius grinder are the Mk2 which is different to the Mk1 though the basic principles are the same. It is a small booklet in printed form, and I'm not sure how one turns it into something I can send out. I will run it through the copier and and see if it will copy and convert to A5. The "bedroom workshop" is a vast collection of pictures of Clarkson gear and there is Mike Haughtons 6 part work in MEW 148 - 153 that is worth reading. As for the attachments, they often cost more than a good tooled grinder when they come up ! As for the belt a poly V run inside out will work if the original is not available.

Ian the motor is a 1/2Hp 2pole 2820rpm and since you only have the motor it may be as easy to change the motor to a single phase. Or use a static converter. The spindle speed is 4000 rpm. If you PM me I can send the machine instructions. I may have a universal head, I will look in the shed. Wheel balance is vital, I twice had a wheel come off ! ! ! Till later. Noel

I believe so ! I will dig them out. Noel.

If you need them I have all the instructions for these machines. I have all the tooling and attachments. Noel.

No Bill ! If my memory serves me right it must have been summer as it was about 9:30PM, at Thornham, on the coast, having observed the sight I entered the pub and told those there to go outside and see. There was no doubt that it was one of those rare occasions when the northern lights come this far south. THEN I had a beer ! Noel.

Simon, if your going to braze make sure you have a high temperature flux, silver solder flux is unlikely to last long enough to get up the heat. Noel.

Thread: Hydraullic crane question
03/07/2023 09:57:47

The operation of such devices is simple ! There is a pump, this draws oil from the resovoir through a suction non return valve and pumps it past a delivery non return valve into the ram, this causes the ram to extend. A second valve in the pressure circuit is opened to release the fluid back to the resovoir and the ram due to a spring or other force will return to it's closed or retracted position. If the pump seal is damaged it will leak or fail to raise pressure, likewise if the non return does not seat then no, or little pressure will be generated. In the case of the delivery non return it may cause the pump piston lift if faulty. If the ram seal is faulty then there will be an obvious external leak and the cylinder under load will retract. If the release valve does not seat properly then the ram will slowly retract, this may be very obvious or may take many hours or more. Replacing the seals should be easy, once you can get the seals, reseating valves may be more difficult. The passages the oil flows through are quite small, so using the right oil is important, to thick and the pump will be starved and try to pump air. A slow and steady pumping speed will be more effective the pumping fast. Ordinary hydraulic oil is 10w or iso 32, good for most oil cans and all general oiling. Noel.

The most likely if its been outside is that the cylinder is corroded at the bottom or the release valve is not seating. Strip and clean out all the crud and try again. Look out for balls or small springs.Make sure the release valve is done up TIGHT. Noel.

Few metals will bond or wet with cast iron very well. IF this item is only decorative I would use an epoxy after good cleaning. Any form of soldering or brazing and the heat used may well crack on cooling. Noel

Ian, For daylight , it will depend on how far North you go, by the time you get up near the north cape there will be not much. As for the Northern lights, I went to the pub one night (in Norfolk ) and saw them, amazing ! Noel.

Thread: How to remove this pulley?
01/07/2023 09:49:06

The keyway and the washer and end bolt indicate a parallel shaft, looks greased so should come off easy ! Diogenes has shown the type of puller I had in mind. I bought one years ago with 2 sets of extension bolts to remove rear wheel bearings from half shafts. Noel.

Yes Sonic, that should do it if not locked ! It's keyed so look for grub screws. Noel.

What is tripping an MCB, short circuit or an RCD, earth fault ? Do you have start and run windings mixed up ? Does it only have one Cap, or 2. Noel

Thread: How to remove this pulley?
30/06/2023 21:01:10

The pulley is very close to the motor end casting so I doubt you will get an ordinary puller in the gap. A bearing puller is what you need, it has a narrow edge and is 2 parts held together with 2 bolts, 2 extension bolts attach to a pulling beam and a screw or hydraulic ram provide the power. OR clean the pulley and use it ? Noel.
