Had similar problems - cured by washing in “Dish Washer” with normal detergent tabs - gave a good wash after with warm clean water - no further problems . Have done same on copper boiler to remove flux scale. Make sure Her To Be Obayed is out. |
Thread: Old lathes, maker unknown |

The one in the background is a Britannia Wood Turning or Straight Turning Lathe either model No (I think 7 or 8) which should rest on a foot driven flywheel stand - The metal cutting tools were “T” shaped on the cutting end with an extended handle on the bottom of the T - the top arms of the T were sharpened and in use one arm was rested in grooves in the top of the rest and then guided along to form cuts on the revolving material. Date of manufacture about 1900 - One was in my family(and used) up until about 1960. Wish I still had it !! |
Thread: Painting a copper boiler |

The etching primer I use on copper boilers and all brass work is u-pol Acid (hash) 8 1K Etch Primer - available at good paint shop (car) suppliers - I find it needs a coat of following paint applied within 24 hrs (after drying period of 1 Hr) (Note:- No Hash Key on my keyboard) Edited By HomeUse on 14/03/2014 10:16:25 |

Normally the temperature of the outer shell (Not Cleading) is not much more than 100 deg C - the superheating of the steam comes after the steam goes thro. superheating tubes in the flue ways - LBSC did not used cleading (insulation) on he’s boilers and did not seem to have trouble with good quality enamel paints - My boiler is LBSC design and is covered with spray applied enamel from Phoenix Paints (No interest in the company other than a satisfied customer) The copper was fully cleaned /dried and scarified all over with a nylon scourer then given a coat of etching primer. Wear gloves as even a fingerprint (oil) will cause later problems. Edited By HomeUse on 10/03/2014 09:52:49 |

I understand that ME threads are based on the BSW thread form so 1/8 x 40 and 5/32 x 32 are the same in both types (for the critical their could be a slight difference in the "Crest and Root" |

Thread: Boring head - metric or imperial? |
18/12/2013 11:37:40 |
OK - mine is M2/M3 tapers and the metric has metric thread and imperial thread (maybe UNF but I think more likely BSW - others may be different - The bars are also metric and imperial. |
18/12/2013 09:07:35 |
Think you will find that the draw bars are also metric for metric head and imperial for imperial head - If your SX3 is metric then you will need to make up inp. draw bars |
Thread: MT2 for rotary table |

Had same problem so bought a blank arbor and cut it down with angle grinder - cleaned up end on grindstone and then found that the arbor was only case hardened so could set centre hole in the end with normal drill - set arbor in lathe headstock to drill. |

If you want a tool that is going to last a lifetime then try "Rotozip"http://www.rotozip.com/en-us/CuttingTools/Pages/cuttingtools.aspx?catid=5122 - the collets take the "Dremel" type cutters/burrs etc. - Had mine for over 30 years, using as hand held or with mountings on lathe and mill. More expensive than most but well worth the extra cost. |
