22/03/2019 18:30:49

Is it intended to fix this problem so that it works in all browsers ?

17/03/2019 20:14:50

Thank you all for your replies I am overwhelmed by the support.

I think I need to be clearer about myself and what I am trying to do. I am a 70 year old with a big problem with maths I have no background in engineering, I have a Clark 300 mini lathe and a Sieg SX2 PLUS mill, the very little knowledge I have comes from YouTube and especially this magazine, I have made several small projects from the magazine so to all those contributors thank you and please keep them coming. I am trying to make a gland for a couple of steam engines I purchased off a well known auction site, the gland would be 22mm x 11mm approx in brass because I have some brass bar of different diameter, (I think I should be using gunmettle maybe someone could advise and why, I would like to know if I am going wrong ) when I saw the photo in the mag I thought this I could do but now I am not so confident but I won't give up.

UPDATE

Just received an update from neil about the jig in the photo and I will give it a try confidence restored.Guidance on brass and gunmettle would be very welcome.

Many Thanks to all, my knowledge is now improved.

Hi to one and all.

HELP Please, for some time I have been trying to find out how to machine an ellipse I have searched this site and the internet there is plenty of information about what an ellipse is but no practical advice on how to machine it. I have been reading with great interest Lathework for Beginners by our Ed and in this month's issue No 270, page 31, Photo 25 a jig for turning an ellipse. the jig looks as though it is made from wood. Please, Please Ed moor information on how to set this up Please!!

Many, Many thanks for any Help.

Looking forward to issue 271 Keith.

Thread: Gas Jet Size
10/01/2017 20:11:34

Many thanks Les, My Mathis is not that good but I know someone whose Mathis is so I shall ask her to have a look. It's not that I am stuck because Stuart models told me witch one to use but I would like to understand how they arrived at it.

Keith

10/01/2017 15:32:34

Many thanks Les looking at the chart I would presume the size of the Burner is what determines the size of the Jet. I also have a vertical boiler of similar size but with much larger burner and a No 6 Jet it would be nice to know how to calculate it so as to arrive at the correct jet.

Hi all, I have purchased on ebay a Stuart HB4 Boiler to run my Stuart Victoria. The boiler did not come with a gas jet so I contacted Stuart Models who were very helpful and told me I need a No 8 Jet. After this I thought there must be a way of working out witch jet is required for witch boiler or burner, after spending an hour on the Net I have drawn a blank, I then thought I need the an Expert so hear I am, I have read the post by mick H on LPG Gas jet sizing but he seems unable to get anywhere. There must be some one who builds model boilers and reads this magazine that can explain how this is done or why we should not !!

Also dose the orifice get larger or smaller the higher number ?

Many thanks Keith.

PS mick if you have found out any information please come back

Thread: James Coombes Engine
03/12/2016 11:52:06

Hi All, I have spent a many hours on the Net searching to no avail perhaps this engine should be called "THE JAMES COOMBES GHOST ENGINE" I can find nothing on the engine or James Coombes his Son or his Grand Son It seems to be the end of the road. I would like to give a big thank you to you all for taking part thanks to you I have learnt a little moor .Keith

30/11/2016 14:12:54

Hi all, I feel I should make it clear the engine I have purchased was off of ebay ready to run I am a complete novice.I have a Mine Lathe and attempt small bits and pieces But I am learning, I have been interested in steam from eight when my Father gave me my first Mamod witch I still have. I intend to do moor research on this engine but after reading the piece that Robbo posted I think it might be a dead end but I will try. Thanks Nick for your link I will read it from beginning to end as I intend to strip the engine down and repaint and clean it. Thanks Jason I will give it a go.

If any one has a snippet of information please post it.I would like to know what happened to this engine, was it scraped or preserved, were there any moor of these engines cant believe only one was ever built.

PS. If any one has any Warnings about taking it apart and rebuilding it please let me know the one thing that dose concern me is the timing I assume it is the same as for any single cylinder engine.

29/11/2016 20:31:53

Hi Robbo, thank you so much for the information, I am even more curious now I will see if I can find moor on James Coombes and the engine. Will come back if I find out any moor.

All the best Keith.

29/11/2016 15:27:57

Hi I have purchased a James Coombes table engine been searching the net but can't find any history on the original engine or engineer all I get is the Stuart Model Engine or James Coombes the actor. If any one has any information it would be much appreciated. May be I am looking in the wrong place so if am could some one point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks in advance and lots of hope Keith.

Hi all, sorry it's been so long but some thing came up. As you can see from the photos I have achieved what I wanted, in the end I went with the Wiggler so much so I have purchased one.Thank you all for setting me on the right track. Sorry one photo is upside down but I don't know how to turn it around hope this is OK.

22/05/2016 16:22:44

Hi all, I have found a darning needle and some blue tack also a piece of bras tube that fits snugly over the molded bolt, I have been having a practice and feeling much moor confidant now. Thank you all for taking the time and trouble to point me in the right direction.

Many thanks Keith

21/05/2016 16:26:50

Hi Neil, yes that's right but I am not confident about finding the center of the molded bolts if I machine them off first I think I would be even less confident. I was hoping some body could give me a simple way to center the mill on the molded bolts only when I do machine the molding I would like to keep the little mold pad under the bolts. At the the moment for me it's like the north face of the Eiger.

Many Thanks Keith

21/05/2016 11:36:27

Hi, I am a complete novice So I do struggle some times. I recently purchased a X2 mill and I would like to remove the molded bolts on a Stuart S50 I purchased some years ago. I am thinking the way to go is to first find the center of the molded bolt and drill it then mill the head off leaving the hole to be taped. If this is right how do i find the center of the molded bolt. If some one has a SIMPLE way of doing this Please enlighten me.

Many thanks Keith.
