Thread: Harrogate show
10/03/2023 09:31:58

Well it is still snowing in Dronfield so we will have to write today off the roads here are still too dangerous. Hopefully not too many are impacted by the weather and can still get to support the show. Fingers crossed the weather improves overnight and we are able to attend tomorrow.
again, stay safe everyone.

Good morning everyone. Scheduled to leave Sheffield now to set up this morning but with the vast accumulation of snow overnight it is too dangerous at the moment. We will endeavour to get to Harrogate but afraid cannot promise today as the snow is still falling.
Not sure of the weather north of Sheffield but I doubt anyone will travel today from below us.
Will keep posting our situation. Obviously any pre orders will be despatched next week at our cost.
Stay safe everyone.

Thread: Solder..?
23/08/2018 14:33:53

Hi Ron, this is a soft solder, Frys were one of the leading manufacturers of these products back in the day. The letter 'K' means this is BS219 Grade K, aka 60/40 Sn/Pb.

The shape is known as a 'plumbers bar'.

Hope that helps,

Shaun.

Thread: Silver soldering contradiction
12/04/2018 12:04:32

I should have also said the gap is at brazing temperature. Fizzy were you brazing two pieces with different expansion properties? It might be the joint opened up or closed tight on heating thereby causing problems. Heat pattern is also important. The alloy will always flow to the hottest point so ensure once at temperature the flame is applied where you want the alloy to go, not where you are applying it to the joint.

12/04/2018 11:58:10

The strength of a silver solder joint comes from the ability of the alloy to flow into a gap by capillary flow, No gap = no joint, simples!

It is true that the narrower the gap the better the capillary flow, but again there must be a gap.

25/01/2018 10:50:37

A friend of mine is getting back into the hobby working with 'O' Gauge. He has asked me where he could source some track for his garden (cheap I guess!!)

I said I didn't know, but I knew a few hundred who probably did!

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks, Shaun.

Thread: London model engineering exhibition

Just got my breath back after returning from the Exhibition. Have to say it was a great success for us, particularly Friday and Saturday when the attendance seemed fantastic.

We at CuP Alloys always have our card machine ready to take customer's money(!!) and even though it costs we have never charged any extra. We didn't experience any problems either, apart from once and that was operator error!!

But as I always say it's not just about sales, we go to support the 'hobby' offer free impartial advice and generally enjoy the chat and banter with you all.

A great weekend for us at CuP.

Thread: propane brazing
27/11/2017 10:55:26

Hi Phil, you don't say how big you components are or what size burner you have on your propane torch. As everyone is saying propane is not the hottest gas, however, problems may be overcome by simply increasing the size of the burner. The heat comes from the energy, ie gas burnt. Think of an electric bar fire, put on another bar, they are both the same temperature but combined produce twice the heat. As Brian says immediately switch to a longer life flux (we call it HT5). There is a small torch using what is called MAXY gas/Oxygen, I believe this to be a 'rose by another name' as we get very good reports. Please see http://www.cupalloys.co.uk/torch-kits/index.asp

Keith has a new book available which goes into more detail on aspects of heating again available via the website.
