But I meant elsewhere in the context of the civilisation involved - just as in the case of the modern instruments I suggested, you'd find remains of the supporting machine tool technology etc. anywhere technical goods are manufactured.

I'm just saying that products don't exist in isolation - their supporting technology is spread throughout the culture's area of influence.

I do not think your hypothesis is valid unless there were thousands of such mechanisms made, rather than the only one so far found.

If they had the wherewithall to design such a mechanism, someone would have the skill to make it.

We can speculate all we want, made all the more intreaging due to only a small part of the mechanism surviving after centuries under water, but will we ever know what it was for, how it did it and how it was made, probably not fully unless another mechanism was to surface in a slightly better condition.

The ancients knew a lot more than we give them credit for.........

Thread: You Couldn't Make It Up
20/11/2022 10:13:42

I cannot understand why forum members read posts they obviously disagree with and then demand their removal.

There are lots of subjets posted on here that I do not even look at because I have no interest in them.

If there is a specific place for 'non forum' topics then I see no problem in ANY subject being discussed.I would like to think we are all old enough, adult enough and tolerant enough to be able to discuss ANY subject without the subject becoming heated.

One might disagree with anothers point of view (Brexit for instance, or capital punishment) but the moderators should only step in when the debate becomes personal or inflamatory.

The tea room on most forum sites is for open discussion on ANY toopic, forum related or not, don't read it if it MIGHT offend or go against your views.

The current wokery in all forms of media seeks to try and negate any discussion that they don't like and demonise anyone who does not agree - dangerous times my friends, we have seen it before and look where that lead.

Thread: A Gentle Question About Clockwork?
18/11/2022 09:49:18

as the original poster stated it was a battery powered watch (one asumes quartz), all the quartz watches I have ever come across that have analogue dials only need moving forwards or backwards to adjust to BST or GMT.

All have had a two position winding stem (adjustment stem on Quartz watches), where the first position is used to alter day/date, second position to set time.

Why would you wind on 11 hours to adjust for 1 hour backwards?

The date would only need adjusting at the end of a non 31 day month unless you are lucky enough to own a watch with a perpetual calendar i.e accounts for non 31 day months.

'One advantage of second hand is that they often come with other kit that reduces their cost.'

This was the main reason for looking at the ML10. I didn't win it however as I was at work so will be going ahead and placing an order with Arc Euro for the SC3.

Of course, I've now also been eyeing up the SX2 Plus milling machine as wellsmiley

SX2P is a great bit of kit if, like me, you are short of workshop space and money.

I have an Amadeal 210 lathe, just a bit larger diameter than SC3, had it for more than 10 years now, again no regrets.

Arceuro are great to trade with and would not hesitate to purchase one of their lathes or mini mills.

There has been a great improvement in hobby lathes and mini mills since I bought mine, the only reason I did not go for the Arceuro lathe at the time was the extra expense of having the lathe fettled before delivery, not now the case obviously.

Don't let the "Myford" snobs put you off, there are plenty of us on here with Chinese machinary that is working well for us, at least with a new machine you gat a waranty and a LOT of Myfords have been much abused despite their price.

Go for both, you will not regret it, I use my SX2P more than I do my lathe.

None of them seem to care very much these days.

regards

There you have it in a nutshell.

BUT can you blame them?

They are paid very little and have to deliver so many parcels in a shift, that there is little or no time for the niceties.

It is not the deliverers fault but the the business model the delivery companies use.

My own recent experience with DHL, ordered a watch from Germany, very fast delivery, item delivered 2.5 days after order placed, at 1430hrs. Unfortunately I was not in so they left it with a neighbour.

NO card to say delivery had been made or where parcel had been delivered to.

The only reason I suspected a delivery was our door bell was stuck on when we got home.

It was not until 21.30hrs that the DHL website said my parcel had been delivered to number 16.

Normally I would rate DHL as one of the top delivery companies, not after this performance.

At least the post office leave a card!!!!!

I am sure we are going to hear more horror stories in the run up to Christmas.

Thread: Accessories for NHS Hearing Aids?
25/10/2022 09:58:15

What you might or might not get from the NHS depends on where you live, I live in South Yorkshire and am ONLY entitled to ONE hearing aid even though I may need two, across the border in NE Derbyshire you get TWO hearing aids if you need them.

When I went to my GP to have my hearing problem looked at, their first question was "why haven't I been to a high street audiologist", with the presumption that I should pay for hearing aids.

So, I was eventually refered to the NHS and got my ONE hearing aid which worked well fort a while but me hearing deteriated to the point I needed two hearing aids, so bit the bullet and purchased new ones.

The difference is amazing, the Bluetooth connectivity is great.

The device everyone seems to be talking about is for those that do not have Bluetooth conectivity in their TV, my Samsung TV has blue tooth audio but I do not use it as I do not watch TV, I connect to my computer via blue tooth and watch what I need on that.

As an aside, forum members may not have seen an article (can't remember where I read it) recently that has linked common chemotherepy medication for certain types of cancer to hearing loss.

The hearing loss seems to kick in at or around the 5 year mark after receiving chemo treatment.

As I read the article everything seemed to drop into place as pointing to the chemo as the cause, I may be wrong of course but my hearing loss started being noticable in 2019/20, I started my Chemo in 2014.

Of course it could just be old age.

Ahhhh! it gets us all in the end angry

I thought DEACS were a manufactures name for circular Nicad packs used in R/C models many, many years ago.

interesting reading, thank you for the link Michael

must try and get hold of the full article.

I note that the losses for the USA would be about 25% of population and 50% of industry. That to me would suggest that the USA would be in a better position than most countries to recover in a reasonable timescale.

Having followed the Ukraine war quite closely, the one factor that has surprised me is just how poor the performance of the forces of the Russian Federation has been.

I know it does not mitigate their overall destructive capability with nuclear weapons but numbers alone are not the final arbiter

MAD has always been the ultimate deterant, but that sadly does not take madmen into account.

On that note , have a nice day folks, the sun is shining and WW3 has niot yet started

Posted by Peter G. Shaw on 13/10/2022 11:01:19:

I was told by my GP that I was "an old man now". This was after bouncing off a ladder having run into it with a knee. I was 38!

I've also run into the "too old at 70" when asking about van hire.

I've also had to realise, for quite a few years now, that my children have their own lives and we, generally, are seldom a part of it. Having said that, it's nice that my grandsons do occasionally come and ask to use my equipment. Or maybe it's because it's readily available! It's also nice that my nearly 16 year old grandddaughter will still give her old grandad a hug, even if she does have to bend down to do it! She's 5'9" whilst I'm now 5'5" having slowly shrunk from 5'8".

There is one thing that I'm pleased about. My maternal grandfather retired at (I assume) 65. I was aged 6. He died in 1954 aged 70, and during those 5 years went from being a fully functioning adult male to someone who had to be told to do every little thing and had to be watched whilst he did it. I was told that he had "lost his memory". As you might expect, this created a rather frightening memory for me, and seeing other (non-related) people develop Alzheimer's hasn't helped. Fortunately, I've reached 79 with very little mental degradation although physically quite a lot. I think, in reality, the mental thing is more a case of I can't be bothered now.

I took early retirement aged 51. I was, when all said and done, in a position to do it and the company wanted rid of staff. I did do a few years in a part-time job which in reality was not worth-while doing but it did at least get me out of the house. And, yes, I've had so far 28 years of retirement. However, I did make a mistake a few years ago and said something about pensions to my two oldest children. Never again! I got well and truly jumped on, and told that they would never have the same pension that I have. Since then, I have kept strangely quiet about finances! I wonder why.

I'm never asked for advice, especially when my children have far more experience of the rough and tumble of life than I've ever had. Occasionally a grandson might ask what I think, but that's only because I do have some experience & knowledge that no-one else in the family has. But in general, my certificates, such as they are, date from 1971 and before. And even then, I lot of what I learned has become obsolete. And that I do find dispiriting.

Old, obsolete, and outdated.

Perhaps I should creep away quietly and go lie down under a stone somewhere.

Peter G. Shaw

hi Peter

Just remember that age has one essential positive "experience".

As we seem to be heading for amageden due to Putins ego, and the world we know descends into chaos, the young (those that manage to survive) will be totally incapable of functoning due to the absence of the internet and smart phones suddenly becomming very dumb.

Who will they turn to?

Yup! thee an' me.

With regard to pensions and pay, whilst those like you and I, who have good pensions, my pay during my working years is only a quarter of what my three sons earn and can therefor afford to put decent money into a pension fund. They all own their own houses - one thing I encouraged them to do as early as possible (experience comming into play).

Those I fear most for are those on mediocre pay and little or no pension savings, by the time they can retire the old age pension as we know it will probably cease to exist and chaos will reign throughout the land.

But! that is a pessimistic view, Me! I'm always the optomist.

As a Monty Python fan I can annoy my children and their children with a painful redition of "Always look on the bright side of life" followed by " I know a song that will get on your nerves"

whilst our bodies may faulter, so long as our minds are still sharp(ish) we can cope.

Thread: Mechanical Mantel Clock
08/10/2022 09:37:06

your budget would be handy to know as there are cheap clocks, middling clocks and eye wateringly expensive clocks.

If it is a 'special' freind and a 'special' birthday I would suggest a carriage clock, plenty of good jewellers sell good quality ones that will appreciate in value and will last a lifetime.

with clocks like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

there are plenty of clocks I would like but are WAY out of my price range.

I treated myself to a carriage clock nearly 20 years ago and recently had to have a new main spring fitted, the jeweler askied me how much I paid for it then told me it would now be worth at least 50% more. quite an investment.

Thread: Irritated by ebay
07/10/2022 09:34:34

Ebay like many other sites such as Amazon, Hobbyking, Aliexpress, Banggood etc all have vagaries that we don't like, such as bombarding you with adverts/offers etc after searching for items.

Personally I just ignore them as being totally irrelevant as i have most likely already purchased the item I was looking for from another source, BUT like I said, while it may bug you(and me!), you can't do anything about it.

Bleating about it on this or any other forum isn't going anywhere and while we may simpathise with you or not, is this really worth a spat?

Come on folks, get a grip and move on.

If feelings are that delicate.............!

It came across to me as a sarcastic comment.

One does not usually go out of their way to thank someone for expressing an opinion in a forum, unless you are being sarcastic.

After being on this forum for quite a few years, I have noted your propensity for sarcasm.

If you can't be polite, don't say anything. (not that you will take any notice)

You are an engineer. Find an old mechanical one and put it in a new box with a few LEDs. Put a DUMMY control knob on the front for the family to fiddle with and a screwdriver hole underneath for you to set the actual temperature.

Remember that fancy electronic ones will be declared obsolete in two years so unsupported and fail in 4 years so they can sell you another one.

I installed a NEST thermostat 5 years ago, works great (still). Best thing I ever did, replacing the old mechanical thermostat.

Smartest looking one on the market.
