I have a model OA which is a very senior citizen, I bought it for £30 from a local business, apparently someone else wanted it and had to make do with another larger m/c which was minus the collars on arbour for positioning and holding cutters so he took the ones off my m/c before I collected it I hope he is happy with them. My query is does anyone know where I can buy replacement collars (they have a 1" bore) ? I have trawled the internet and unable to find them without buying the arbour as well, machine has INT 30 taper, this is too expensive for me, perhaps someone has some lurking redundantly in a dark corner of their workshop they might sell at a reasonable price

Hi,

Found a couple of USA dealers selling them (http://www.mjvail.com/ShopAid/steelarbor.html) but at $50 or $60 each not cheap.

Have you tried G&M Tools to see if they have a used arbour and or spacers.

Regards Barry

Over the past 3 or 4 years I've picked up quite a few spacers/collars as well as an arbor (2MT fitting though) from E-Bay at sensible prices, you might find them listed as arbor collars rather than arbor spacers. It's really a case of keeping a look out. They seem to come up when someone is having a big clear out or a company has been wound up.

Here's some:- **LINK**  or here:- http://www.mscdirect.co.uk/CGI/INSRCH?No=10&Ntt=milling+arbor+spacer&N=0&Ntk=Keyword+Search&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1 but it'll probably work out cheaper to by the whole arbor from RDG.

Nick.

Not knowing any better Mick (and having one missing at the time) I just turned a replacement up from some scrap mild steel for use on my elderly Victoria Horizontal. I now know (of course) that my 'copy' was just a pale imitation of the real thing (it's not ground, not hardened and probably not to microns accuracy either). It's just a steel cylinder faced at each end with a 1" hole bored through it....which might sound simple enough to do (if you take a bit of care) but clearly there must be more to it....?

Well, now I'm somewhat older (but much wiser - at least in my opinion) and I now know that you clearly need all the 'precision' that the Far East is capable of throwing at such objects (special steels, induction hardening, ground surfaces, not to mention enormous cost). Perish the thought that you could actually make something (almost) as good in your Shed!! No special steels, no hardening, no ground surfaces....sounds like some form of engineering heresy (fleeting image of self burning at stake).

The funny thing is that mine (against all the odds) seems to work quite well. I was looking at the arbor just now and I couldn't immediately spot which one was 'my' spacer ... although I'm afraid they are all showing their age somewhat.

Anyway, enough. With a bit of effort I'm sure it will be £30 very well spent. Horizontals are very handy machines (for those that appreciate them e.g. learn to use them well) and once set-up and equipped your A&S will be a very useful tool indeed. Please let us know how you get on with it.

Regards,

IanT

Heres a pic of A&S. Agree with you IanT all my machines are old apart from a WM 14 mill.the older m/c are nice and solid, probably as I'm a war baby I always prefer working in Imperial can't get my head around metric or cnc/cad.

I have been computer free all my life but my grandson bought me a tablet,I'm still struggling to find out tofind how to use it so god knows what I'm doing, theres supposed to be a picture of mill on this post but I don't know if its here -Crikey how did I do that--regards Mick
