Emma Victoria query

Hi all, I am slowly but surely (ok sometimes unsurely) proceeding with my first loco, Emma Victoria.

I have made the parts for the steam cylinders (ie fabricated version).

However just noticed something does not add up, unless I am missing something.

The distance from cylinder centre line to outer edge of endplate is 1".

The valve face appears to sit flush with this edge. The centre line of valve face and cylinder appear to be the same so valve face should be 2" wide but it is 1 7/8".

Interestingly the optional cast cylinder is similar, the valve face /chest is also 1 7/8" wide but in this case centre of cylinder to outside of end place is 7/8" rather than 15/16" I would expect.

Can any one show me the light please.

Where you are going wrong is that the centre line of the valve face is not the same as the cylinder centre line. On both fabricated and cast versions, the centre line for the valve face is 15/16" from the outer edge. I hope this clears it up for you.

Hope I haven't stirred up another hornets nest here, just noticed the thread on 'Live steam locos'

Can I say that from my perspective I am finding Henry's series really enjoyable, it is written in a really detailed manner, essential for a beginner.

What appealed to me in the first place was that was a nice looking engine (matter of opinion I know) and it was designed to be relatively easily built by a beginner.

I have to say this got me interested in building a model steam loco which was something that did not particularly appeal to me before as I thought it would be too advanced for me.

So for one, Henry has converted me, so it pains me to see such criticism, not exactly an encouragement to anyone contemplating writing an ME article. Having written thousands of words and documents during my years as an engineering manager I completely understand and accept the odd error or missing info in such a lengthy article.

I hope I get a nice helpful reply and not a criticism of the design.

I put these threads here as it concerns a series currently running in ME.

Thank you Henry, I did wonder if that was the case but as this is my first engine I do not have the knowledge to make up my own mind with certainty.

As I posted above, really enjoying the series so thank you for getting me interested. I still look forward to the next issue even though I am way behind, it gives me plenty of time to ponder on the design and how to make it.
