Pin spanner wrenchs, what sizes type are there

Hi,

I need to remove my bp mill knee dial holder with a pin spanner. I don't currently own such a tool and it made me curious. So out of interest can anyone educate me about the various sizes with respect to the diameter operating range and the pin size. Google is not finding much about what the standard size ranges are if indeed there is any standards.

Size will depend on the type of pin spanner. I have friction ones that would easily go upto 150mm ctr distance though you loose leverage, I also have ones with a screw adjuster which limits them to about 50mm ctrs.

Some have single dia pins and some have stepped pins that will cover a few sizes so long as the hole is deep enough. I may even have one with screw in pins so size can be altered

Best bet is to measure the pin holes and spacing then use that data to narrow your search.

They aren't difficult things to make, the pins can be made from turned down cap head screws with the ends sized to suit your holes.

I would follow that route rather than trying to find one to suit.

Do you mean the type liek a "C" spanner but with a pin?

In which case the "C" will cover a small range of sizes and the pin needs to be one that will fit your hole if fixed, again you may find one for the right "C" dia with interchangable pins

Ah! C-spanner AKA 'hook wrench'. Draper quote these sizes, note how great the range is:

19-51mm

32-76mm

51-121mm

Don't quite agree with you there Neil, to me a hook wrench/ C spanner is this

But the pin type has a round pin rather than a hook like this do can fit a hole in teh side of a circular nut etc rather than a slot like an ER nut
