I am picking up on this build from a number of years ago, a good piece of the work has been done and now it is mostly snall fiddly stuff...I would like to make the linkages out of non ferrous ...brass bronze and copper, would that look out of place.

John.

Go on John - give a clue - what was it that you left off building a number of years ago? Difficult to advise without knowing!

By the title I would say its a James Coombes engine.

Its unlikely to have been used on full size engines of this type but if you are not worried about historical accuracy then brass would be the best of your three materials

Hi Jason, solves that question then...as I have loads of brass bar and little of steel, I personally think it looks better.

thank you for the replies and all the best for now,

John.

It's a purely personal matter - and it's your model - but I think brass would look entirely wrong for the linkages. OTOH, steel parts with (where appropriate) bronze bearing bushes would look just right; the contrast would create the right effect. Copper, of course, would be totally unsuitable because of its softness and it is horrible to machine.
