Lots of discussion going on in my other thread 'Honing vs Reaming', and I've finally got around to asking myself 'what surface finish is actually most desirable in the cylinders of a steam locomotive?' As I didn't have an answer I thought I'd throw the subject open to you all. An article from 1920 talks about a reamed finish 'like glass' and I assumed that is what I should be aiming for, but is it ? Isn't it likely to be influenced by piston seal material ? By means of lubrication, or lack of it , or other factors I haven't considered ?

Please give me the benefit of your experiences,

Thanks,

Ken.

I try to finish my bores 3-4 though smaller than the finished size and then three stone hone them.

The finsh is usually good depending on the material. I can get the best finish on stainkless steel.

cheers

Brian

Again its going to depend on material and packing/rings.

On CI cylinders with iron rings I use a two or three stone hone depending on dia.

If its bronze or CI and going to have graphite yarn, PTFE or O rings then I would lap the bores as honing is a bit abrasive.

In all cases bored to a though or two oversize.
