Simple mill engine

The simple mill engine ME 4460 p115. The bill of material gives the size of the base MP1 as16mm sq x 50mm, the same as the valve chest CP3.

Also the photo shows the cross head secured by brass dome nuts but they are not listed in the fastenings p116.

Just a minute, this article is by the Technical Assistant, who's checking the checker ? or in this case, not.

I think:

That part MP1 is the base of the cylinder.

That part MP41 (listed on page 116) is the base of the complete engine.

However Stewart Hart will probably be along soon to give the definitive answer!

As regards the dome headed nuts I guess that there is deliberately a certain amount of flexibility in building the engine.  For example Part MP18 slide bar pillar is shown in the Bill of Material as either 'hex bar' as in the picture (photo1) or round bar.  It would be relatively easy to turn up a set of 'acorn' or 'dome' nuts if the builder was so inclined from some hexagon bar..

Eric if you look at the photos or 3D renderings its plainly obvious that both the valve chest CP3 and cylinder base MP1 have been made from the same size square stock. Maybe you are thinking MP1 is the base for the whole engine?

As for the nuts the drawings and 3D renderings show normal hex nuts which I suspect is whats on the bill of materials and Stew has just tarted up the engine to suit himself.

Correct Jason, I assumed that MP1 was the base for the whole engine.

It came about because MP1 is seperate from the Cylinder assembly and was listed as a mill engine part MP and not a cylinder part CP.

It would probably have been better listed as "Cylinder base" but there is a reason Stew has grouped it with the "CP" parts of the cylinder as hopefully there will be other variants of this engine which use the same generic cylinder parts. For example a vertical engine would use most of the same cylinder parts, MP1 would be dispenced with as its only needed for the mill engine and one of the cylinder end covers may get a few extra mounting holes.

Hi Chaps back from the hols bin up in the artic circle looks like i was missing summer in the UK. The part MP1 would be better described as the cylinder base as Jason suggested, I'm planning to design other engine using the same cylinder parts but these wont need the base. As for the dome nuts, the smallest cemercial dome nuts i could find were M3 and i think they would be a tad over size so on the bill of materials I just specified M2.5 nuts, but i fancied using dome nuts so just made my own they are straight forward to do, but if any one wants to know how to do them i can aad some info her. You don't have to folow my plans exact if you want to add some wistles and bows you can do, you will see that i fancied up the engine base some what but didn't show this in the drawing that I've kept simplified.
