Somewere in the house I have a book giving coeficients of friction. The special bit is the coeficients are between different materials eg. steel on brass, steel on cast iron etc. etc. Lots of combinations. I can not find this book and am going barmy. Can anyone remember what the book is, or where to find the imfo. ? ps I've tried google with no luck, maybe just my searching.

My 1941 Machinery's Handbook has a few combinations in it. Could Machinery's be the book you were thinking of? Some of the combinations involve wood and leather, and those given for metal on metal only involve bronze, cast iron and wrought iron, though a more modern Machinery's might be more comprehensive.

PS There is a table on this page, if you scroll down. It also cites a few reference books.

Thanks for quick replies. My mac Hinnery is prewar , coefficients between wood, leather etc. The two references are the sort of thing I was looking for, these will be ok for my use and will print off. My book similar but just a lot more.
