gland nuts

hi all just building my model and was wondering can the gland nuts for the cylinder cover be made out of brass as this is what i have to hand and i dont have any money to buy bronz or gunmetal the model is a tich, im not bothered if thyl need replaceing in the next few years but can brass be used,
