I purchased a Super X3 mill last April and I am now in the process of setting it up. I checked the spindle using a test bar in the morse taper and I find that with the mill running at low speed it appears to be running 1thou out. I am only starting to get around to Model Engineering and I am wondering if this result is acceptable for this type of mill. Any help would be appreciated.

At what point on the test bar (how far from the bearing) are you measuring?

I'd also measure the inside edge of the MT just to make sure its not the bar. Did it not come with an original test certificate. Also check the bearings are adjusted properly my X3 adjusting nuts were so loose you could move the spindle 20thou each way.

I am not near the mill at the moment but as far as I can remember the test bar is about six inches long supplied by Arc Euro Trade. I measured at the top and bottom of the bar with the same result. I did remove the spindle and it appeared to be tight but as you mention it Jason I can move the test bar about 10 thou each way at the bottom of the bar.
Unfortunately I did not know that a test certificate should come with the machine. Good point about measuring the inside of the taper. Thank you all for your help so far.

The test bar, or the mill spindle, tapers may be slightly wrong which is a reason why it could "wobble".  If it's not visibly loose try coating with blue, or just some very soft pencil lines down the length of the arbor, then rotating it in the socket and checking that the "wear" on the marking is even.

I bought a large Chinese keyless chuck with a separate MT2 arbor and was puzzled as to why the chuck keeps rotating in the tailstock when drilling.  Then I noticed that the arbor wobbled in the socket, its taper is wrong!  At least I assume it's the arbor, as the tailstock is by Myford and other MT2 arbors are fine in it.

Thank you John for your suggestions. It will be a week before I get home to do some more testing. I will come back with the results.
