Regrease of quill bearings

Hi,
I have just aquired a Meddings MF2 floor mounted drill press and I was wondering if anyone else has one because I dont know how to get at the quill bearings for a regrease etc,  Ideally I want to remove the Quill and strip if possible.
I have looked at the quill and everything is so well made and I dont want to try prising something off only to find it had a screw thread!!.
I have found how the return spring comes off but cant see how the star handle is removed (looks like some sort of locking pin!) which should lead to the quill coming out?
If anyone has any info/adjustments etc I would be very gratefull for anything.

Hi There
If it is the one I think it is easy.
It is 35 years ago since I did some but here goes.
Don't force anything in case I forget something.
 
Remove the handle spring. Be careful, it might bite.
 
Remove the drill stop nuts so the quill can drop down.
 
I think you may have to remove the quill lock if there is one.
 
Right, quill is out or should be.
 
Lower bearing is tapered upper possibly plain.
 
In the side of the quill there should be a small hole.
 
This enables you to put an allen key into a collar on the spindle.
 
Loosen the screw and the collar will be free.
 
You should be able to lightly tap the top of the spindle and it should come out.
 
I think both bearings may come off fairly easily but can't remeber for sure.
 
At least you can grease them easily.
 
Reassembly
 
Put a chuck in the spindle.
 
Reinsert the spindle.
 
Put the collar on but do not tighten it up.
 
Get a bit of tube and put it over the splined spindle pressing the collar tight.
 
Tighten the collar.
 
Job done, reassemble the remainder.
 
These were old round top models but I don't expect the design changed much over the years.
 
 
Press the chuck against the bench or similar while pressing the tube against the collar.
 
Let me know how you get on.
If you can take photos you could write it up for MEW.
I expect there are many of these machines out there.

Hi David,
Thanks for the info, I thought it was something along the lines of what you said and its sometimes nice to have it confirmed by somebody else.
I will look at writing an article for this and will let you know when I have something as im already registered with you for writing.
