Is there anyone out there that can me how to create a Dxf. file for an auto-cad drawing. Am I right in what I am asking for? I believe this is what is required if you would like something to be produced by water-jet cutting etc.. When created is this file simply downloaded to a disc that is sent to who ever is undertaking the work? Does the drawing/file have to include all of the dimensions ?

Hi Boldminer,
Which program are you using at the moment, If its a drawing program like turbocad or indeed Autocad then when you save the drawing there is a drop down list of file extensions and one of them is DXF
 
simply save it as XYZ.dxf you can then copy to a disc

Hello as Kerbtrawler has said.
 
I also include in the accompany letter a dimensioned drawing to prevent any scaling error. (so that the whole lot can not be swallowed by a small dog)

If it's a genuine "AutoCad", you're drawing everything at full size anyway? However, a separate dimensioned copy is a good "Discussion" point with out having to look at a screen and do a load of enquiry dimensions.

Our newish plotter which we sold last year used EPS or DXF files, but was happier with EPS.  If I'm sending stuff off, I usually send copies of DXF, EPS, PDF and JPG, on a disc, that way they can sort out what they want themselves. It only takes a a few seconds to save each one.
 
If you are using a Mac with Vectorworks and some other CAD programmes, you may need to "Export to DXF", which will create a new file somewhere, which can then be burned to disc and read by any platform.
 
Programmes such as Adobe Illustrator can also "save as"  EPS and DXF files, though I've found that importing such files to Illustrator sometimes gives odd results.

On that last message, the plotter ran on a windoze machine running it's own software, networked to the Macs.
