Model Engineer 4353 sees the start of another new locomotive design series.
Nick Feast starts the description of Charlie his Southern Railway Q1 in 3 1/2in. gauge. This is designed as a beginners locomotive and the drawings are in metric dimensions rather than the more usual imperial ones.
Feel free to post constructive comments as the series progresses.
 
Castings are available from Polly engineering.

In a period when a streamlined coronation takes to the rail again. This locomotive must be the ying to its yang. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I just cannot see any in it at all.

Still it’s good to see a new construction series starting in ME. As it all adds to the fund of knowledge and I look forward to picking up ideas as the series develops. It’s no easy matter to design your own locomotive and Nick Feast should be complimented on not only taking the plunge, but committing it to paper as well.

I have just bought the frame steel for the Q1 from the metal supermarket,  just over £6 bargain !
i do consider myself as a novice, the only problem is my lathe and drills reamers etc are imperial oh well !
i have liked this design for years and wanted to build one for years, it may not be everones cup of tea, you like it or hate it !
i think it is great to see a biginners loco, i am 36 and have learn't all i know from my dad a model engineer and a very good model engineering club (Coventry GEC MES) without these I would not know where to start
cant wait for the next issue!

Better late than not at all but to encourage Nigel I should say that all my reamers are imperial so he shouldn't have any trouble with axleboxes etc. The axles are of course 1/2" but converted to a metric measurement.
I have also stuck to BA and ME threads since the cost of metricating all those taps and dies would be eye watering!
Using metric for all the linear dimensioning made sense to me since it simplified the maths. I can't get on with 64th's and using metricated inch fractions makes no sense as you end up with 3 decimal places when you don't need them.
Hopefully there are no too many mistakes with the conversion but If there are serious ones I am re-issuing revised drawings to Polly so that future builders can benefit.

I am getting on well at the moment no real tears yet!
i am finding it very straight forward so far, good drawings and good write ups .
i thought to save a bit of money i would machine the horns from solid steel and make cast iron axleboxes
but now looking back i wish i had bought the castings because it took so long !
i was down at bristol model engineering show a couple of weeks ago and it was great to see the actual loco on display many photo's were taken
what a lovely model

Hi Nigel,
Glad that a Southern engine was appreciated in Great Western/Midland territory!
A black diamond in a field of Brunswick Green and copper! 
I am aiming to have the chassis running on air at the Sandown Park show in December, with the aid of laser cut parts I have been able to build the second loco a lot quicker than the first.
There are few castings needed on this model, I have tried to avoid them as on the full size Q1. There's only wheels, horns, cylinder block and end covers on the loco and wheels, horns and axleboxes on the tender. The full Bronze cylinder set is available but pricey. There's plenty of lumps of bronze on ebay for sculpting slide valves and so on.

I'm not sure on the distance for the third row of stays on the boiler, as they look closer together, than the first and second row. I cannot see how manifold attaches to boiler: is it via screw thread?
