Evening all!

First time posting, have come up a little stuck with my Tom senior mill. I’ve had an issue with the y axis and decided time is time and today was the day to fix it, however, it had other ideas.

I’ve stripped it all down but I’m struggling on the final hurdle which the the T shaped in the centre underneath the bed (where the spindle essentially goes through) and I can’t for the life of me work out how to get it out. Any ideas / solutions greatly appreciated!

Are you stuck trying to remove the table to get to the underneath?

You should just be able to pull the bed out from the knee. Once removed you can withdraw the bull screw along with the handle and the tee nut.

It’s the tee but I’m struggling to get out, here’s a pic. Any tips for this would be appreciated.

thanks!

Good evening, Dt,

This forum has a particular method for posting photos. You have to create an album and then upload the photos into it, then call them down into your forum post.

There should be a link pinned to the top of the home page somewhere. It's quite simple once you get used to it, say by about the third photo. You can have as many albums ('alba'? ) as you like for different subjects.

Best regards,

Swarf, Mostly!

P.S.:  ALWAYS type a space before typing a right bracket - this avoids waking-up the smiley gremlis!

I have a Tom senior and I've taken it apart several times but I'm afraid I don't understand the problem from the description and the photo is too zoomed in for me to see what we are looking at. If you could be a bit clearer with the problem and show more in the photo I should be able to help.

I couldn't make sense of it either and like Buffer I've dismantled mine in the past

Sorry gents, not the best at taking photos!

It’s basically the y axis spindle nut that I’m struggling to get out. the whole thing is in bits but I can’t seem to figure out how to get the y axis nut out.

I’ll try and take another photo if that doesn’t make any more sense?

thanks!

The manual for several variaitions is on the Denford website, and here is the link to the pdf. The nut for the Y axis is shown on p13. These mills are very easy to strip down.**LINK**

I have pictures in my album of modifications done to the Y axis nut for antibacklash. The igp 2994 shows the hole that the nut sits in, and the nut and the nut and its modifications ars from igp2998, to igp 3013.

I downloaded that, just out of curiosity, and was amused by the scale declared on p10 angel

Did you notice the R8 head, much more complicated than my R8 mod to the light vertical head, I only have two taper roller bearings.

As for the scale, the original drawings have been scanned, so they could be any size.

Thanks old mart, I had found your post on an earlier thread which was brilliant and will be very helpful, what I’m struggling with is actually removing the y axis but, does it screw from the Top then drop out or is there a trick I’m missing somewhere?

I think you remove any gibs from the Y axis and lift it up. the nut will remain with the Y leadscrew in the knee. The picture, 19-49-08, with the red ring shows the nut in the hole after the screw and washer have been removed, clean the muck off and you should see the bronze.

When you lift up the Y axis part, press down on the nut in the hole at the same time, it should not be a tight fit.

I am nearing the end of a rather drawn out refurbishment of my Tom Senior M1 milling machine. I started taking it to bits 3 years ago!

Everything has gone more or less to plan, but I have a few minor issues to sort out.

The first one is that I have mislaid the 2 nuts which secure the knucklehead assembly to the 2 mounting studs. If someone can let me know the thread that woud be most helpful. My first guess was 3/8" UNF or UNC, but those are marginally too small.

Andrew . On an English machine I woud expect them to be either Whitworth or BSF
