Been a member for a while so thought I would do a post. Did my time in the 60's at Reavells Ipswich since then numerous jobs and now retired.

Some 50 years ago I saw a Congreve rolling ball clock and said one day. Well that day has finally arrived.

I have an old pre-war Acorn lathe which I have owned for over 40 years, it's a bit worn like me.laugh

Hello Ian and welcome. Not built a Congreve clock but have made the English Regulator, which keeps excellent time.

I don't think that worn machinery should be a problem, you just need to learn and compensate for it. And another thing, a lot of clockmaking is handwork and even the turning does no need to be that accurate, the main thing is that parts should fit fairly loose so that there is no friction.

I wish you all the best with your project and look forward to reading updates on progress.

If you find you need help and advice then this is the place to come.

Brian

Hi Ian, welcome. Are you near Ipswich still? I'm at the other side of the county, actually a mile or two over the border in S Cambs.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I live in Kesgrave now, it's between Ipswich and Woodbridge.

Not worried about the accuracy of the lathe, as you say you just make allowances, it's materials that worry me, 2 sheets of engraving brass 12x18x1/8" and 4 1"dia 12" brass £278! disgust
