Hello from the Malvern Hills (UK)

Hi Guys,

Returning to model engineering after a 40 year break and now in the process of setting up a workshop (9x15 shed). First job will be to complete the 80% finished Stuart 10V I started at school. 'Only' the eccentric rod and centre of the crankshaft to do; trouble is I've forgotten so much.

I'm thinking then a larger Stuart vertical or beam engine - and ultimately perhaps a 3 1/2" gauge loco. I also like old scientific instruments and astronomy, so maybe some inspiration there: I've wanted to build a spectroscope for a while.

The forum posts have already been very helpful in informing my equipment plans - which lept forward this week with the ordering of a WM250V lathe and a Sieg SX2.7 mill, and I know where to come if/when my crankshaft efforts come unstuck.

Hello Tim and welcome to the forum.

The V10 is an excellent subject and it shouldn't take to long to finish it if you are 80% there.

Your to do list will, no doubt, grow as time goes on.

Good to see you taking up the reins again.

When things return to something approaching normal, would Worcester, or Hereford be to far join the Clubs there?

I can certainly vouch for Hereford, like many others, being a friendly and welcoming club.

And next door, The WaterWorks Museum is well worth a separate visit

Thanks Howard. Sure, both locations quite doable (being in the middle we tend to claim allegiance to either city as it suits us!). I'll check the clubs out. Hereford Waterworks Museum reminds me of the Abbey Pumping Station in Leicester that I'm familiar with.

When open again to the public, T WWM has a variety of engines pumps, and turbines, many of them actually capable of rotating under power, Gas, I C and steam. They have one of the oldest working triple expansion steam engines in the country

From what I have found, they have about the only working 9" bore Wilson oil engines, that is still left in the world.

A nice display on Stirling engines, and two full size hot air engines that run

During Covid, volunteers go in each week to turn things over and keep the exhibits free

So, well worth spending an afternoon visiting

One day, we may even meet there!

when you mentioned Croome i remembered that i did the cnc engraving for their notice boards some years ago
