How do I fit the balance weights

I am baffled by how to fit the balance weights on the wheels of my King 5"g loco.

The weight is flat but the spokes need a bent material. Do I bend it or mill out the spokes? Looking at photos it appears the weights are flat. On the Perrier King design, the driving wheel balance is off set, ie not exactly opposite the crank pin. I assume the wheels on both sides are identical.

Hi David

I have not got as far as that yet on my Perrier King but here is a photo from a King example at a show. As you can see the weights comprise flat plates fitted either side of the spokes and then filled with something suitable of your choice before painting. I would be disinclined to mill anything off the spokes but file or machine suitable slots in the plates so they fit snugly to the taper on the face of the wheel. The back spokes should be flat and pose no issue. I would rivet together on the wheel with hollow spacers to keep everything nicely spaced. Centre and rear are opposite the crank we with an offset on the leading wheels as you remark.

Hopefully someone else who has actually done this on other designs will furnish us with their best practice.

regards Martin

Thanks to all who replied.

Looks like the weight is definitely flat.

The plans show a tapering of the edge of the weight.

I wish I could go and see a full size King and examine it in detail.

What I really need is a cross -section diagram!
