rolling stock, carriages

I have an 00 gauge 9f and I would like to add rolling stock to it. I know this loco was used on passenger hauling on the South West line and my query is what type of carriages were used.

They obviously would not be modern, and there are so many differnt sorts by regions.

Your best bet to be certain would be to find photos. 9Fs were certainly used in the summer on the Somerset and Dorset line during the 1960s but not in the winter due to lack of steam heating.

The 9Fs were fairly late introductions so coaching stock would be a mix of BR Mark 1 and pre nationalisation designs (some built post 1948), Hawksworths (WR), Staniers (LMR), Gresley and Thompson (ER) and Bulleids (SR) would all be used on the S&D depending on the origin and destination of the train, for example Exmouth to Cleethorpes used LNER stock.

If you want a short train then look for post 1962 S&D photos. The 9Fs were sent back to the S&D after 1962 even though all of the through trains had been diverted away so they could be seen on stopping services, typically 3 or 4 coaches, either Bulleid 3 car 'multidoor' sets or a mix of WR stock (the WR being in control of the S&D by then).

The noted railway photographer Ivo Peters documented the end of the S & D, his work is well worth a look and there were lots of 9F's, as Andy has pointed out.

Apparently, higher management forbad using 9Fs on passenger work after they found that they were being used to run at 90 mph or more, when pressed into passenger duty, rather than their intended freight work!

Possibly the best of the British Railways Standard designs?

Certainly the last to be built.
