Motor repairs

Hi, can anyone recommend a motor overhaul place in the Derby area.

My lathe motor has developed an issue so need to get it looked at.
It’s a Tyco Crompton one for a Super7. When running it now makes a vibrating sound, although can’t physically feel any vibration and sometimes it does not spin at all, just buzzes. It’s getting upto speed no problem, just very annoying to use it in this state. Guessing bearings are gone but I’m far from expert on things like this.

Changing the bea rings yourself is a very easy job and will save you a lot of money over getting it done. They would have to be pretty bad to stop the motor turning altogether though. Could be a problem with start windings and associated switch or capacitor. In which case things get more complicated but not beyond the scope of the home workshop.

Easiest way to check the bearings is to take the belt off and spin the motor pulley by hand. Should feel nice and smooth with no lumpiness or binding.

You could try them but they are at the 'big stuff' end of the trade.

Could well be cheaper to get a new motor.

Used to use a firm in ( Shaftesbury St. ? ) but I think they're long gone.

It is many years now since I was based in Derby but a Google search produced the following:-

Your fault description sounds like a start capacitor failure if your motor is fitted with one, they usually live in the round bulge on the outside of the motor. It is either that or the starter switch built into the motor which now has dirty contacts. The least likely fault is a winding failure

It will mean taking the motor apart to clean the switch, the capacitor would be a simple replacement part. If you are unhappy with that sort of work any competent sparkie will do it for you and test the windings.

+1 for Brian's suggestions of either a failed Start Capacitor, or a faulty centrifugal switch.
