I need to fit some oilite type bushes into steel. They are 3/4" bore 7/8" od finished. At present, unfitted, the od is 0.880"

I know they will compress down to the 3/4" bore when fitted - but what size should the steel be bored to do this?

Thanks

Nick

Nick a 5 second search on the internet came up with this link from the makers themselves.

At work we always use a reamed (H7) hole for Oilite bushes.

Thanks guys -

Keith - I bought my bushes a few months back from a local bearing supplier, but I had seen the Bowman page - Unfortunately I can't see fitting tolerances on there - hence my enquiry.

Keith - so a 7/8" reamed hole will squeeze the bush to size? - I want to run precision ground stock in the bush so finished size is important to me.

Thanks again,

Nick

Nick,

Have a look at this previous thread: **LINK**

It's rather buried in the Bowman site, so this direct link might be useful:

http://www.bowman.co.uk/products/oilite_bearing_calculator?measure=metric&type=plain

[There is a companion one for flanged bearings.]

Choose an appropriate size for the bearing and then look at all three tabs.

You can ream the bushing to final size if needed. Oilite literature says use a sharp reamer.

I think I can see what the problem is.

The Bowman site give information on the housing dimensions etc for metric bearings and not for imperial sizes - or at least not for this particular imperial size.

Entering 0.750 bore, 0.875 od and 1" length and imperial standards into the bearing finder produces a bearing, but not the fitting information that you get if you use metric sizes and the UK standard.

So when you guys were saying it is on the Bowman site you were quite correct - but not for this size!

And when I was saying 'Oh No it isn't' I was correct too!

Isn't the internet a wonderful thing.

Thanks everyone for your efforts

Nick

Hi Nick,

Just checking that you also know not to lubricate, drill or ream the Oilite without careful reference to makers instructions? (it is very easy to clog / 'smear' the surface and prevent the lubricant coming through)

I learned the hard way some years back!

Hello again.

I have just dug out my works copy of the Oilite data sheet.

Your bush being 7/8 OD x 3/4 ID is a CT.15 by the looks of it, they come in various lengths from 1/2" to 1 1/4"

The actual ID high limit is 0.7515"

The actual OD low limit is 0.8765"

The bearing conforms to BS4480 and ISO 2795 and is suitable for fitting into a housing made to H7 limits, providing the housing is rigid the resultant fitted bore will be H7. If a fitting pin is used it should be to a tolerance of m5.

Hope this is what you were needing.

Phil
