7227 forum posts 21 photos | Parallel flute reamers tend to be more prone to chatter in my experience. Helical fluted ones are superior, if only because the location in the bore is better. If you are talking diameters, Hand reamers taper for a greater length than Machine reamers which have only a short lead. My preference when holding in the Tailstock is to use a holder which allows the reamer to float. This allows the reamer to follow the hole, and lessens the risk of the Reamer acting as a boring bar to cut oversize. Howard |

![]() 1101 forum posts 3 photos | Alan I think that you mean ,"machine reamers," these have minimum lead and produce parallel holes nearly down to the bottom of blind holes, the flutes are usually spiral which helps produce truly round holes. The company where I worked used Drill Services at Horley Surrey over 30 years ago. Their products were very good and as Andrew ueses them now they must still be good,their products were never cheap but were very good, I have a lot of machine reamers some purchased others "won" they are far more useful than hand reamers and if treated with care,run at half drilling speed and properly luricated they will last for years. |
