img_1005.jpgimg_1007.jpgimg_1006.jpgany centec owners that can help with the quill lock on my new mill, all the pics i have seen show a handle and not a bolt, the right hand side sticks out about 3" in the first photo you can see the whole assembley it looks home made the long shaft is threaded the short part is a clearance hole for the bolt. when the bolt is tightened it locks the quill but does not release the quill it needs to be tapped with a mallet this can not be right any help please

Geoff

This is how it should look. If I get a chance I will remove mine and post a picture unless someone beats me to it!

We have two mills at the museum, a large Taiwanese drill mill and a Tom Senior light vertical. The both use the same style of quill lock as your Centec, the D M one works perfectly and the T S one tends to jam and need hitting lightly to free it. It must be the way the pinch clamps fit the quill. I must look at the way they fit the quill.

Geoff,

Just for you I have been out in the cold! wink

Body dia. 0.748; right clamp 'bit' 1.144 long; Total length 3.136; smaller threaded bit of right 'bit' 0.378; All one piece; left 'bit' of clamp; 1.438 long, same 0.748 but clean bored of course.

The diameter of the lock 'wedge' you can get from the quill of course.... Good choice of mill, BTW.

ATB, Roy

This is what I think would be the best profile for the locks. First get the diameter of the lock wedges the same as the quill. Then relieve the inboard ends a bit so the outside clamps first. The angle of contact is slightly greater and hopefully less likely to jam in place when the tension is removed. Touching at B would be preferred._igp2513.jpg

Morning Roy

thanks for the info sorry you had to go out in the cold but much appreciated. I have made a sketch using your dims will make a new one later in the week. got to make some pulley wheels for a luthier i do work for today

have you got a riser block on your machine first thing i made as the height between vice and cutter is limited with the riser gives me a lot more scope so far very pleased with the machine

Many thanks Geoff

Yes, I do have a riser, One of the last batch that Gary Wooding made. I've not actually used it yet as my work up to now hasn't required it. (Sorry, Gary!) I normally use an ER16 collet chuck which gives reasonable headroom with small cutters and I hardly ever use a vice. Things will change when I start to make bigger stuff. I do have a Posilock type and a fair number of larger screw type cutters which will require the riser.

Fair few Centec bods on here so you won't have too much trouble with other enquiries.... Not sure what has happened to the Yahoo Group...

I thought that died years ago. A veritable waste of space as a forum - posts often took days to get ‘cleared’ for the forum - but did have a few useful members (none more so than Binswood, who was, and still is, a mine of useful Centec info).

Had a look at the yahoo group. Still there but no activity since April '18! Files, conversations and photos still accessible.

Suspect the Centec group has moved from Yahoo along with the Myfordlathes group, to groups.io due to the retreat to emails only function on Yahoo
DaveD
p.s any files/pictures on Yahoo will be lost sometime this month IIRC

p.p.s link for myford is 'Myfordlathes  @  groups.io search for similar Centec link
