Hello. I'm a new member and am at present attempting the restoration of a Ragan Little John lathe. A 6" chuck came with the lathe - with the wrong backplate, which has a 1.75" 'V' form thread and not the square (6 tpi) the Raglan needs. Someone mentioned a member on the forum enquiring about a backplate (1.75" diam with BSF form?). Does anyone know of the member?

regards. Peter Newton

I very much doubt that a lathe with 6tpi Whitworth or Unified thread would have the same register dimensions. Possible, I suppose, if you are looking to sell. Check out the wanted section on the forum.

Bore out and sleeve it, if there is sufficient metal to do so. Then recut with a square thread.

I see second hand Raglan back plates selling for around £60 delivered, on epay. They are easy enough to make - and one would be confident there is sufficient metal to safely cut another spigot.

There are threads, for making spindle nose protectors, on :

If you want to make a Raglan backplate/faceplate by re-purposing one from another lathe you'll need to find on with a sufficiently wide boss yet an existing thread of 1.5" or less to allow enough material to cut the 6tpi square thread.

A Boxford one would suffice, if the rear boss is wide enough to accommodate the Raglan thread.

Smart & Brown use a 1 3/4" X 8 W spindle thread, with a 1 3/4" diameter register.
