Lorch LAS lathe

Hi All

Now the 918 is on its way to Ron's house I want to get on with sorting my new to me 1958 Lorch LAS. the first thing will be to strip the Head stock spindel for a good clean and the fit a new belt. So my question is Has anyone done this before and are there any particular pitfalls to look out for. I have the manual from lathes.co.uk which is a good start

Where I work we had about a dozen of these set up for various operations, now we are down to one, and on a countdown to closure.

Anyway I do remember our instrument fitter who looked after these small machines, taking apart the epicyclic backgear once, and regretting it, evidently a pig to put back together and get to run smoothly. So might be wise to leave it in one piece unless you have to strip it, You can remove the spindle and pulleys without disassembling the backgear. it's quite straightforward.

Very nice little machines perfect for steam fittings, I was hoping to get the one from work as a part of my redundancy package, but that looks unlikely at the moment.

I'm sure you will be pleased with it's performance.

thank for the heads up I will leave it well alone turning the spindel by hand it all seems to run very smoothly. The Lathe has not been powered up for over ten years and the belt looks ok but with counter shaft and original belt the machine will be to deep for my bench

I put in a new belt on my LAS a year ago and I don’t remember having any problems (other than actually getting the new belt in Aus.)
