Hi all help please. I need to make a number of female to female thread connectors. Having drilled the appropriate hole size and then tapped the same, what is the minimum amount of material that should be left from the internal thread to the outside of the brass stock. Is there a rule of thumb for this. . The connections will be used on my small boiler expected to steam between 30 and 40 PSI

Not sure what you are asking, is it the distance from the hole to an edge, or the distance from the bottom of the hole to the other side of the metal. For AF of pipe fittings have a look at standard parts, at your pressure air fittings are more than adequate. For the alternative question, assuming pressure from the inside on solid metal towards the hole, it will depend on hole size and I am sure some one here can give a guide or the correct formula.

If you are talking about screwed unions then a typical 1/4" x 40tpi nut used to hold a nipple/ferule into a steam fitting will have an AF dimension of 5/16" so that would give a wall thickness of 1/32"

Thanks gents I think I should have asked “what is the minimum wall thickness left after the thread has been cut “ that time s adequate for its use.
