Setting up a horizontal mill engine that is fitted with an eccentric water pump. There appears never to have been a clack valve fitted to the delivery side piping. Will it need one? "Not much used to statics engines!"

Any advice appreciated.

Most pumps have a check valve on the intake and one on the delivery. Usual cycle is to pull water in past the intake check, with the delivery check closed to allow suction. Then water is pumped out the delivery check, with the intake check closed to allow delivery (and not allow pumped water to just cycle back into the intake pipe or port).

Yes, if it's supposed to be a working pump.
