Hi Guys-need help!

Hi. I am in the process of trying to build myself a modest workshop. At the moment i use the local Makerspace in Newcastle upon Tyne. As money is really tight, i hope to make as many tools as possible myself. To this end i'm designing a 6" wide linisher based on a 1.5kw capacitor start/run motor of a certain auction site. The rear of the case was slightly dented when i got it, which jammed the fan and so the shaft would not turn. Now i've sorted that out i need to test it under power. It apppears to be an unused surplus Electrodrives Alpak machine.

This is my question: where do you connect the earth from the mains supply? there is a thread on the end of one of the capacitors-what is it's purpose? Is that an earth connection? If so, do i take a connection from it through a hole drilled in the side of the control box and connect to my three core mains wire there, before drilling another hole for the cable to exit to the power source?

This is my first time playing with induction motors, so please be patient with me!

I've bought an unused Electrodrives Alpak 1.5kw machine from a popular auction site. All the internal wiring is complete, i just need to test it under power. I can see where the live and neutral connect to, but my question is this-there is a trhreaded connection on the end of one of the capacitors opposite to the end the wires are connected to, What is it's purpose? Is it an earth connection? There is no pre-drilled hole in the side of the control box for a mains lead, so if this is the earth connection, should i drill a separate hole for the earth connection from the capacitor into the box to connect to the mains cable?

Hi David,

The threaded stud on the end of the capacitor canister is simply there for mounting purposes.

When you remove the cover from the terminal box you'll see the two power connection, which you have already identified, and the earth connection which is typically a tapped hole in the casing usually in one corner of the enclosure under the lid. There should be an 'earth' sign cast in the surface right next to the hole. If the motor is really unused there's a high probability it will also have the screw in it.
