Thread: Motor control circuit

Many thanks to all those who have replied with the benefit of their experience. The VFD is model

FR-D720S-042SC-EC. It's to power a Fobco drill. I'm not concerned about NVR and it's only me using the equipment.

OK. Now I have my VFD, remote pod and a nice, large enclosure. What about contactor/circuit breaker? Are these strictly necessary in a home workshop? This project is starting to get expensive and I don't want to spend money I don't really need to. If so, what exactly do i need on my shopping list? The motor is .37kw 3ph (wired Delta now) to be run off a 1ph domestic supply.

I looked up the contactor Mitsubishi, (the VFD manufacturers), recommended and it was pretty pricey. Is there a cheaper alternative?

Many thanks people.

I'm needing a little help picking the correct drive. I've looked at the manual on line, but I'm still a bit confused Could anyone please tell me if the following model would be suitable for powering my 3ph fobco from domestic supply? Many thanks.

Does anyone know where i might find a suitable wiring diagram? Off/On, forward/reverse and pot for the speed control?

Thanks again.

Thank you both very much for your help. I feel a little more confident now!

Actually, i've just found this guide on-line for a Siemens device. Looks like just the job to me, and the guide answers all my questions.

Anyone agree with me?

Hi. I've just bought myself a decent Fobco Star, fitted with the original dual voltage 3PH motor. I want to be able to run it from my normal 1PH supply through one of the cheap VFD's of the usual auction site. The one i've seen is rated for 0.45kw. My motor is 0.33HP, ie. 0.25kw. Is this OK? Also, I want to add a remote speed and direction control to assist tapping ops, and for convenience. I believe i need to wire the motor delta, but i'm not sure what voltage/current the parts for the remote control box should be. I'm assuming it would be a low voltage circuit? Forgive my ignorance, but i'm not electrically minded, and have never dealt with 3PH before.

Many thanks for any help.

Thread: Another 'which gas torch' question...

This is 10mm thick x 80dia done with HT5 flux and the standard Sievert burner, kit like this should do you. Take a couple of mins to get upto temp so get the next size up burner if you are in a hurry.

Thanks for the advice. Your work looks similar in nature to my own. I'm in the process of constructing a compact power hacksaw to Myfordboys plans. It's very similar to the old Kennedy machine in principal, using the hex bar for the slideways.

Plate is about 60mm x 50mm.

Hi. I'm new here and need a little help. I've searched the forums for similar threads, but none really answer my question. I need to silver solder some 19mm AF mild steel hex bar to some 10mm mild steel plate. Can anyone recommend a torch/burner combo please? Also, what kind of heat output in kW will i likely need? Don't mind paying for quality kit. Many thanks.

Thread: Hi Guys-need help!

I've bought an unused Electrodrives Alpak 1.5kw machine from a popular auction site. All the internal wiring is complete, i just need to test it under power. I can see where the live and neutral connect to, but my question is this-there is a trhreaded connection on the end of one of the capacitors opposite to the end the wires are connected to, What is it's purpose? Is it an earth connection? There is no pre-drilled hole in the side of the control box for a mains lead, so if this is the earth connection, should i drill a separate hole for the earth connection from the capacitor into the box to connect to the mains cable?

Hope this makes sense.

Hi. I am in the process of trying to build myself a modest workshop. At the moment i use the local Makerspace in Newcastle upon Tyne. As money is really tight, i hope to make as many tools as possible myself. To this end i'm designing a 6" wide linisher based on a 1.5kw capacitor start/run motor of a certain auction site. The rear of the case was slightly dented when i got it, which jammed the fan and so the shaft would not turn. Now i've sorted that out i need to test it under power. It apppears to be an unused surplus Electrodrives Alpak machine.

This is my question: where do you connect the earth from the mains supply? there is a thread on the end of one of the capacitors-what is it's purpose? Is that an earth connection? If so, do i take a connection from it through a hole drilled in the side of the control box and connect to my three core mains wire there, before drilling another hole for the cable to exit to the power source?

This is my first time playing with induction motors, so please be patient with me!

Many thanks.
