7 forum posts | often see posts on here ,relating to the old ml 1_2_3_4 lathes..seems there are many still around....often on ebay...though they are all getting worn out..I have two I am refurbishing and the apron pinion gear is a sticking point, cannot find replacement..must be hundreds of these worn out, 1 mod gears close, but not available on imperial shaft, could modify one, but how hold a small gear to small shaft..not sure on loctite..pity some company was not able to make a batch . d can cope with most of it..one problem is the the apron pinion, must be thousands worn out, cannot find anything from Edited By lee sargent on 16/04/2018 00:15:35 |

![]() 7881 forum posts 397 photos | Will a gear off ML7 Myford not fit? The original would be an imperial DP gear, which are still available as blank gears. Not sure what DP. Maybe 20? To hold the gear to machine a hole in the middle, you can turn a sleeve that fits around the outside, slit it with a hacksaw and then hold the gear inside the sleeve in the four jaw chuck and set it running true (or even in the three jaw chuck if its in good condition) and drill and bore the hole in the middle Edited By Hopper on 16/04/2018 03:27:08 |

7517 forum posts 20 photos | Not sure of the size, but there are several options, I would think. Here are five. There may be more. Machine from one piece, loctite, pin pinion/gear to shaft, shrink fit, get someone else to make them for you. |

. Loctite 638 [or similar] should be entirely adequate. For discussion about how to use it, there are many previous threads on this site. MichaelG. |

2742 forum posts 39 photos | Lee, Despite the attractiveness to you as an owner of having accessible spares, making a batch of these against an uncertain sale frequency of maybe 1 or 2 a year, together with the necessary advertising to keep them in front of the potential buyer's eye just doesn't make any kind of economic sense. Would you take it on I wonder? The answer for you is to buy a 20 DP gear [Myford racks are 20 DP] of the correct number of teeth, the pressure angle hardly matters for this duty, turn off the old worn gear to leave a plain shaft surface and braze on the new gear to bring the component back to life. If you can't do that yourself you will have to find someone who will do it for you and pay them to do so. This is one of the realities of owning tired old and obsolete machinery I'm afraid Regards Brian |

7 forum posts | thanks for all replies..sorry I messed up my post..typing on small screen...I thought ml2 pinion was 25dp ,a non standard size I believe , have been checking out model car motor pinions tamiya etc..but these are close ,but hardened thro, not practical to bore out at .250" ...the shrink fit idea, not sure would work on such small dia..brazing ,iI would like to try. going to increase shaft to 8mm silver steel ,and reduce end slightly to locate a gear..12 tooth gear quit small, might take a 7mm hole..also working on a idea..pair reduction gears to slow down hand traverse..possible room for these , on front of apron..bag full o cheapo plastic gears, to get the geometry right ,before I buy any metal gears..they pricey..the obvious answer would be new racks an pinion but im not a lottery winner..last note, I scrapped original spindles , new ones en24t...screwcut nose same as ml7, worthwhile, i am happy to receive any comments forthcoming.....footnote..all slides off the lathe have been machined and scraped, new gibs from bronze, used ml7 feedscrews on slides..slow but sure..thanks |

![]() 6956 forum posts 229 photos | Perhaps you could measure the rack to confirm the DP and put it on this thread for future reference. Save leaving people hanging and maybe getting the wrong one some time in the future. Given the title loads of people are going to find this thread in a search. |

![]() 7881 forum posts 397 photos | If its an odd DP as you speculate, you might be easiest off to buy a good used rack and matching pinion from an ML7 and fit it. |
