Somewhere I have seen article with the necessary measurements, etc.

Can someone tell me where I can find this, please?

I made mine from a chuck backplate casting from College Engineering Supply ( other sources are available). No drawings for it, just made it "on the fly". You can machine the overall height to be lower than the equivalent of the compound in order to use larger tooling. As I only use the compound for tapers or threadcutting, I keep a couple of holders set for the relevant tools and the rest for the largest tools that will fit the slot. Please see photo in my album.

Just get a block of cast iron and machine it to match the size of the top slide and base so it fits in the existing socket. This extension could be fabricated with cap screws and a couple of dowels, bonded with locktite I recently did this, the setup is far more rigid and no more fouling the tailstock. An alternative is a plate drilled for bolts into the t slots perhaps with a spacer to bring the height but this will be more fiddly to set up after needing the topslide for short tapers or screwcutting.up just build it. No drawings needed. I suggest positioning the tool post on the left of the cross slide just overhanging its edge or the saddle would not be well located on the lathe bed when working with collets faceplate or very close to the chuck. The backplate idea sounds good, but you won't be able to offset the post so easily unless it's a big one........added for edit  If it's exactly the same height as the top slide then holders work in both systems without any adjustment.

Gordon, that's just the suggestion I needed as I was looking to either buy a chunk of CI to machine down or get a casting made! Which of the CES backplate castings did you use please?

John,

I made mine about 8 years ago so don't remember the exact size, but from the dimensions of the finished article I recon it must have been 6" diameter.

For information, the finished height above cross slide is 1.25", the diameter of the boss on wich the toolpost sits is 2.5" and the width of the base is 3.125". These dimensions are of course my personal preference (or my c*ck-ups). The boss is offset to the left for the edge of it to be in line with the left edge of the base giving the whole thing an unsymmetrical look but hey-ho at the end of the day it works.

There is no spigot below the toolpost stud to engage in the hole in the cross slide as I see no need to rotate the whole assembly.

All machining was done on a Myford ml7 apart from the 4 screws to clamp to the cross slide.

Hope this helps,

Gordon.
