Suggested stud size for Multi-Fix "A" tool post

Rather than continuing in the "Multifix threading tooling and options" thread I'm starting a new one for this question. I just received a "Multi-Suisse" size A tool post from SRW Amestra. My lathe has a tee-slotted compound (top slide) rather than a fixed stud for holding the tool post so I have some choice, within reason, for the stud diameter. In particular, Joe, what's the stud size on your EMCO? And Murray, I see you are using a socket head cap screw in your direct mounting to the cross slide. I could incorporate that in the stud I'll be making for my compound's tee nut. What size of screw did you use?

You might want to look at whether it's possible to drill and counterbore a custom hole a bit further back in the top slide. The Multifix toolposts and holders hang out quite a long way. I'm thinking of doing that with my Hardinge HLV because the overhang leads me to have the top slide a long way back quite often.

I used an M16 hex socket bolt. I got it from China (probably AliExpress) although the head was a bit wonky. No problem - I faced off the bottom face of the head to make sure it was square. There is a cylindrical bush at the top of the Multifix post that I needed to bore out to 16mm to suit the Chinesium bolt.

One of the critical features is the register on the top of the adaptor that locates into the bottom of the Multifix post. If you ensure it is a tight fit in the post, there will be very little slop there. If you understand what I mean. You'd want to make sure it was also a tight fit into the top slide too - on a Bantam, there is a cylindrical feature on the top of the top slide. However, I decided to do away with the top slide for improved rigidity.

Thank you for your suggestion Mark; I think I'm OK in that respect. My lathe is a Monarch 10EE. Had I gone with the next larger "E" size tool post this may well have been a problem.

Murray, thank you, that's the sort of information I need. I think I understand what you mean. When making the stud to go in to the tee nut that will go in the tee slot of my top slide I'll turn a portion of it to an O.D. of 20mm for a close fit in the bore of the tool post.
