Portass 4 jaw chuck

12 forum posts | Anyone know where I could get a 4 jaw chuck for the portass. I've had a look on eBay but not sure if they will fit also what will I need to help center this thanks guys |

1817 forum posts 2 photos | Hello Chris, There are plenty of small 4 jaw chucks around, but you will be lucky to find one that will fit your lathe. You will need to make up a backplate and then fit a 4 jaw chuck to it. Not too difficult, apart from cutting the internal thread to match the lathe. Andrew. |

1817 forum posts 2 photos | Hello Chris, I am pretty sure that the Portass lathe has a screw on chuck. I.E The chuck thread engages the thread on the mandrel nose and then screws into place. It is this thread that you will need to cut in the centre of the backplate. I am sure that some Portass owner will correct me if the Portass doesn't have a screw on chuck. Andrew. |

368 forum posts 122 photos | As long as the thread hasn't been played with, it should have a 1" BSF thread. You'll need to buy a blank casting for the back plate and machine it in your existing chuck, or a back plate with the same thread already cut. This is then mated to the chuck with the bolts. Then dialled in to reduce run out. Have a search on you tube, but here's one you tubers take on machining a back plate, always find his videos funny and educational.
