Looks like a Jacobs gear hobber. It was described in ME in the 1970s. With a basic understanding of gear theory it shouldn't be difficult to work out how to use it.

It's a Jacob's style-gear hobber. I have one in a similar state 'awaiting restoration'.

From MEW 253 we will be running a short series on how to use a Jacob's type machine.

If your club has a collection of MEs, have a look at Volumes 141 and 142, 1975-76, articles "A gear cutting machine" by T D Jacobs, there are also some of his comments and pictures in the "Postbag" of the time.

Some instructions for use are in issue no 3541 of 16 July 1976.

Mr Jacobs spread his articles around a bit!

Mr Jacob's explanation of using the machine wasn't too clear.

Harold Hall described making the CES machine from castings in MEW 58,59,60 but didn't cover the use of the machine. I don't know if he covers using it on his website.

Ivan Law and the late Giles Parkes covered hobbing in issues 56 and 57 of MEW, but again no explanation of the use of the Jacob's machine.

Alan Adlridge's gear cutter is cap-able of hobbing gears but he didn't cover the use of this method, instead focusing on using single tooth cutters with automatic indexing of the blank.

Chris Robinson's articles in MEW 169, 170 and 172 on cutting helical gears may be helpful, his latest article looks at other different gear types.

What we really need is a step by step description of cutting standard gears- I will ask Chris Robinson if he could do this.

Be a 'goodboy' and find your way over to U-toobsmiley.

Search for 'gear hobbing' and all, or most, will be reavealed somewhere amongst the videos.

Wow! what club has so much kit that something like this can be neglected?

Quite a long thread last year on the hobber included somewhere in it a spreadsheet for calculating the gear trains.
