605 forum posts | Thought I was going well with manufacture and dry assembly of boiler until I came to try the water and blower pipes that pass over the firebox and they would not. Found that I had allowed a bit more length on the endplates (4 13/16 rather than 4 5/8" One of these 'I could have kicked myself' moments, stopping to think about it before measuring and drilling may have avoided the problem. 2356 forum posts 47 photos | Hi Bill, Any chance of using smaller dia pipes? Or squashing down the pipes you have a bit? Or routing them at the side of the box , or somewhere else? Just some food for thought, sorry you've had the OOPS. Good luck with fixing it. JD |

5307 forum posts 83 photos | If it's dry assembled (ie not silver soldered) can't you patch the firebox backplate and re-machine the hole? |

605 forum posts | I did think of all sorts of ways round it, but having found some copper sheet I had left over decided to do the job properly and make them again. I usually regret not doing this when I try to do a shortcut round a problem. Hopefully teach me to be more careful in future (but not banking on it) Bill D |

![]() 1285 forum posts 353 photos | Hi Bill, Do not attempt to cut out the firehole ring in the backhead until the inner firebox has been completed and crown girder stays silver soldered to the outer wrapper. Glad to hear you have a solution via more copper plate. Cheers, Julian |
