![]() 7881 forum posts 397 photos | Take a piece of suitable pipe then turn a ring that fits snugly over the gear and the OD and ID are concentric. Part off the ring to about the same thickness as the gear teeth. Then slit the ring in one place to allow it to "spring" and use as a sleeve to hold the gear in the three-jaw. If you want best accuracy, do the same but hold in the four jaw and set up the ID of the gear to run true before boring out larger or whatever you are doing. Been boring and reaming the bronze bushings in Harley transmission gears this way for many years without a comeback. Edited By Hopper on 06/06/2016 14:24:21 |

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | If the number of teeth are divisible by 3 then just use the chuck jaws but depends on accuracy of your chuck. Softjaws or a split bush if not, small gears may fit into a collet. |

459 forum posts 28 photos | I made hundreds of gear blanks when an apprentice, and soft jaws are the best method, if the standard hardened chuck jaws are not true then a split bush may not correct the error unless one is very careful. Chris Gunn |
